MET ? Getting going again. | Jon

After an enjoyable one month off, I?m back on the MET wagon. ?This term I?m enrolled in two courses again ETEC 533: Tech in Math and Science ?+ ETEC 531: Curriculum Issues in Cultural and New Media Studies.

I?ll zoom to 533 right now as the readings have the gears in my mind working quite nicely. ?After going through a few articles for my upcoming assignment about Teacher Education in Science/Math these thoughts came up:

1) Differences between Asian and North American teachers are more than just cultural differences. ?In order to understand why Asian students achieve so highly on mathematics, it?s important also to look at the structural organization of how the teachers are trained and encouraged to train. ?Liping Ma?s study of elementary math teachers illustrate that Chinese teachers are i) specialists in the field (teach only math) ii) encouraged to further their studies (via Masters program) based on competition iii) provided time to review content during their regular work day.

2) PISA emphasizes the importance of how structural organization can impact student success. ?Policies at a government level can drastically alter how our students can succeed. ?Out of the results and goals that are pushed to the forefront is that all students regardless of ability are capable of being pushed to succeed not through repeating a grade but by proper teaching methods the first time.

Looking forward to another term of examining educational practices.
