Okla. tornado damage: Thousands of homes, $1.5-$2B

MOORE, Okla. A $2 billion tornado damage estimate illustrates just how daunting a task the recovery will be for residents of the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore.

Other figures released Wednesday are equally shocking: as many as 13,000 homes damaged or destroyed and 33,000 people affected. The number left homeless was still unknown because most of the displaced were believed to be taken in by relatives. Only two dozen or so have stayed overnight at Red Cross shelters.

At the same time, more details are emerging on the human toll, including heartbreaking details about the final moments of some of the children who were among the 24 people killed Monday.

Six of the seven children who died at an elementary school suffocated after being buried under a mass of bricks and steel.
