Seven days in, still no verdict in Edwards trial

The jury has been deliberating since April 22, and have at this point brought all the evidence into the jury room.

It was shortly before 4:30 p.m. EDT, the typical quitting time for the day. Judge Catherine Eagles took her place at the bench, allowed everybody to get settled back in their seats after all rose for her. Then, while the jury was still out of the courtroom, she looked coyly at the faces staring up at her.

?The jury sent me a note saying they?ve reached,? Eagles said, letting a long dramatic pause linger in the air.

Then with a smile and a bit of a heave of her shoulders, she finished the sentence with ?a good stopping point.?

The seventh day of deliberations ended without a verdict, and with many questions among media crews and the small group of spectators who have made a habit of spending their day inside the windowless wood-paneled courtroom in downtown Greensboro.

Could the jurors be hopelessly divided, but not yet ready to declare themselves at an impasse?

Were they still going through the six charges methodically, not yet settled on all counts?

Since Thursday, the jury has had all the evidence published at the trial inside its deliberation room.

The judge has not brought the eight men and four women out from behind closed doors to answer questions about evidence. There have been no public discussions about any questions regarding the law or judge?s instructions.

On Tuesday, after a long holiday weekend, prosecutors and defense lawyers met with the judge in a closed courtroom, keeping the public waiting and out of the loop about what was being discussed.

One of the alternate jurors, a woman whose trendy red top and smiles and giggling in the courtroom were the subject of many Twitter reports and blogs last week, was taken into the courtroom by one of the security guards on Tuesday and then quickly ushered back out during the closed session.

The courtroom was opened after that and dozens of media representatives sat on the wood pews, reading and waiting for any sign of a decision from the 12 behind closed doors.

The alternate jurors have now been at the courthouse for seven days with little to do. They sat through opening statements, almost four weeks of testimony and closing arguments, they found out they were the four who would be on call if one of the initial 12 jurors could not follow through with their service.

The alternates have been instructed not talk about the case among themselves or with others. They still cannot read or watch media accounts and they cannot talk with the jury about the case, though they all eat lunch together.

The alternate jurors, who smile across the courtroom at the 12 they used to sit among, caused a stir among spectators last week when they all wore yellow shirts on Thursday and red on Friday, either intentionally or coincidentally.

On Tuesday, they wore black and gray.

Before sending the alternates and 12 on the jury off to lunch on Tuesday, Eagles cautioned them more firmly than she has for many weeks.

?After juries have deliberated for a while, there are a number of things that can happen,? Eagles said. ?Some of them are not good.?

She told them not to surf the Internet or look up anything about the case. She cautioned them not to engage in any deliberations outside the jury room and to make sure all on the jury were present. A verdict, she said, should be derived from a collective process.

?Small group discussions ? have the potential to be divisive,? Eagles said.

Some of the jurors have alerted the judge to potential scheduling conflicts if the deliberations continue through this week and into the next.

?It appears to be high school graduation season,? Eagles said to grim faces among the lawyers and media crews hoping for the deliberations to close sooner than that.

Edwards, 58, is accused of six felonies related to violations of campaign finance law. The allegations are tied to more than $900,000 provided by two billionaire supporters to support his pregnant mistress during his 2008 presidential run.

Jury selection was completed on April 23 and opening statements followed that day.

The jury began its deliberations on May 18, a Friday, and quickly asked for many exhibits, a sign that they were not likely to reach a quick verdict.

ITV Player 2.0 brings live streams of the UK broadcaster's TV channels to iOS

Image

It's on Apple's iPhone and iPad, but this is the ITV Player, not the rumored iTV supposedly under development in Cupertino. After initially launching last summer (along with an Android version) offering streaming video on-demand, the UK channel's iOS app has been updated to version 2.0 to offer a live streaming feed of its two channels. Other than just ITV1 and ITV2 over WiFi or 3G, if there's a live event being broadcast that isn't on either, you'll still be able to tune in via the app. Other new features include AirPlay Mirroring, easier switching between content, improved location detection (to determine what channels are available) and Retina Display quality graphics on the iPad. Unfortunately, The Digital Lifestyle points out catch-up access is still unavailable over 3G, but those with access should grab the new app from iTunes.

New York Wine & Culinary Center Adds ? But Now Says it Will ...

The New York Wine & Culinary Center will excite, inspire and engage New Yorkers and the world in a celebration, understanding and appreciation of New York wine and food through educational programming and partnerships, making it a part of their everyday lives.

That excerpt from the New York Wine and Culinary Center?s (NYWCC) website would seem to say it all.?New York deserves a place to showcase its agricultural wonders without the distraction of other regions.

Unfortunately, according to a recent email newsletter from the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, ?the newly renovated restaurant at the NYWCC, ?now known as the Upstairs Bistro, has significantly changed its wine list. The list, which previously listed only New York wines, will now list fewer wines from New York and include non-New York wines.

Upstairs Bistro?officially opened last Friday at the New York Wine & Culinary Center in Canandaigua, with a new name, a new look, a new menu, and a new wine list.? Formerly the ?Taste of New York? restaurant, the Upstairs Bistro includes a bar area, main dining room, and seating on a wrap-around deck overlooking Canandaigua Lake.? The decor features brighter colors and a wine bottle with flowers at each table.? The new menu includes reasonably priced starters and salads, pizzas, light fare and sandwiches, entrees, side dishes and, of course, desserts.? The selection of New York beers has been expanded while the number of New York?wines has been greatly reduced to 10?choices from various regions, now joined by wines from California, Chile,?France, Italy, and New Zealand.? The wine list, menu and other information are at?www.upstairsbistro.com, which includes a ?Contact? option for comments or suggestions; or email?info@nywcc.com, phone?585-394-7070.

Yes, you read that right ? wines from around the world being sold at a place that?purportedly exists to celebrate New York wines, beers, spirits and foods.

Not surprisingly, some in the New York wine industry are ? I think rightfully ? disappointed by this decision.

?There?s a lot of hard-working people in this state who struggle mightily, not only to produce quality products, but for recognition of those efforts. It seems unconscionable to me that an entity that wears the badge and flies the flag for New York winegrowers and farmers would throw that same dirt in our faces. The local food and local wine movement is sweeping across the nation ? how can any one place be so far on the wrong side of a trend?? said Jim Silver, General Manager at Peconic Bay Winery. He?is not alone. Others contacted me privately but declined to speak on the record.

The question that must be asked is simply, why?

In an email, Jim Trezise, President of the New York Wine and Grape Foundation and member of the NYWCC board, told me ?that he thinks the Bistro?s wine list should only include New York wines, saying ?I was unaware of this decision until after the ?ribbon cutting? (ceremony), and was not consulted. ? He added, however, that the Foundation has never had any input into the NYWCC?s wine selections.

Next, I emailed Alexa Gifford, Executive Director of the NYWCC, who yesterday told me that their ?focus has been and will continue to be New York? but that ?We did add five non-New York wines to our wine selection to meet customer requests.?

She also characterized the non-New York wines as a ?trial? saying that they would ?track the wine sales.? Since the?Upstairs Bistro on May 18, 81 of the 84 bottles of wine sold have been New York wines.

The full drinks list at Upstairs Bistro. The list was removed from the NYWCC site this morning.

Taking a look at the?wine list?(which has been removed from the NYWCC website) the non-New York wines include a Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc and a Clos du Bois Chardonnay, both distributed by Constellation Brands, whose CEO, Robert Sands, serves as President and Chairman of the NYWCC board.

Gifford told me yesterday, however that ?Mr. Sands was not involved in the wine selection process at all.?

My plan for early this morning was to dig deeper to find out just how the wine list is put together ? the who, the how and the why. Why choose mediocre Bordeaux or New Zealand sauvignon blanc when there are better wines made on Long Island? Why pour an Italian Moscato when there are off-dry sparkling rieslings available in the Finger Lakes??And perhaps most importantly, why choose Constellation Brands wines, risking the?perception?that Mr. Sands may have perhaps undue influence?

But then I received an email from Gifford today telling me ?We have already pulled the non-New York wine off the list. ?

That is, of course, the correct decision regardless of any sales numbers. Customers visiting NYWCC should be greeted with the best New York has to offer. They deserve it and so do the farmers, brewers, distillers and winemakers of the state.

Gifford signed off her last email to me earlier by saying ?The NYWCC has purchased nearly $2 million of New York wine since opening and will continue to support and promote New York agriculture.?

For that the NYWCC should be commended. Hopefully the decision to sell non-New York wines was nothing more than a one-time mistake.

Discovery of historical photos sheds light on Greenland ice loss

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? A chance discovery of 80-year-old photo plates in a Danish basement is providing new insight into how Greenland glaciers are melting today.

Researchers at the National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark -- that country's federal agency responsible for surveys and mapping -- had been storing the glass plates since explorer Knud Rasmussen's expedition to the southeast coast of Greenland in the early 1930s.

In this week's online edition of Nature Geoscience, Ohio State University researchers and colleagues in Denmark describe how they analyzed ice loss in the region by comparing the images on the plates to aerial photographs and satellite images taken from World War II to today.

Taken together, the imagery shows that glaciers in the region were melting even faster in the 1930s than they are today, said Jason Box, associate professor of geography and researcher at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State. A brief cooling period starting in the mid-20th century allowed new ice to form, and then the melting began to accelerate again in the 2000s.

"Because of this study, we now have a detailed historical analogue for more recent glacier loss," Box said. "And we've confirmed that glaciers are very sensitive indicators of climate."

Pre-satellite observations of Greenland glaciers are rare. Anders Anker Bj?rk, doctoral fellow at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and lead author of the study, is trying to compile all such imagery. He found a clue in the archives of The Arctic Institute in Copenhagen in 2011.

"We found flight journals for some old planes, and in them was a reference to National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark," Bj?rk said.

As it happens, researchers at the National Survey had already contacted Bj?rk about a find of their own.

"They were cleaning up in the basement and had found some old glass plates with glaciers on them. The reason the plates were forgotten was that they were recorded for mapping, and once the map was produced they didn't have much value."

Those plates turned out to be documentation of Rasmussen's 7th Thule Expedition to Greenland. They contained aerial photographs of land, sea and glaciers in the southeast region of the country, along with travel photos of Rasmussen's team.

The researchers digitized all the old images and used software to look for differences in the shape of the southeast Greenland coastline where the ice meets the Atlantic Ocean. Then they calculated the distance the ice front moved in each time period.

Over the 80 years, two events stand out: glacial retreats from 1933-1934 and 2000-2010. In the 1930s, fewer glaciers were melting than are today, and most of those that were melting were land-terminating glaciers, meaning that they did not contact the sea.

Those that were melting retreated an average of 20 meters per year -- the fastest retreating at 374 meters per year. Fifty-five percent of the glaciers in the study had similar or higher retreat rates during the 1930s than they do today.

Still, more glaciers in southeast Greenland are retreating today, and the average ice loss is 50 meters per year. That's because a few glaciers with very fast melting rates -- including one retreating at 887 meters per year -- boost the overall average.

But to Box, the most interesting part of the study is what happened between the two melting events.

From 1943-1972, southeast Greenland cooled -- probably due to sulfur pollution, which reflects sunlight away from Earth.

Sulfur dioxide is a poisonous gas produced by volcanoes and industrial processes. It has been tied to serious health problems and death, and is also the main ingredient in acid rain. Its presence in the atmosphere peaked just after the Clean Air Act was established in 1963. As it was removed from the atmosphere, the earlier warming resumed.

The important point is not that deadly pollution caused the climate to cool, but rather that the brief cooling allowed researchers to see how Greenland ice responded to the changing climate.

The glaciers responded to the cooling more rapidly than researchers had seen in earlier studies. Sixty percent of the glaciers advanced during that time, while 12 percent were stationary. And now that the warming has resumed, the glacial retreat is dominated by marine-terminating outlet glaciers, the melting of which contributes to sea level rise.

"From these images, we see that the mid-century cooling stabilized the glaciers," Box said. "That suggests that if we want to stabilize today's accelerating ice loss, we need to see a little cooling of our own."

Southeast Greenland is a good place to study the effects of climate change, he explained, because the region is closely tied to air and water circulation patterns in the North Atlantic.

"By far, more storms pass through this region -- transporting heat into the Arctic -- than anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere. Climate change brings changes in snowfall and air temperature that compete for influence on a glacier's net behavior," he said.

Co-authors on the study include Kurt H. Kj?r, Niels J. Korsgaard, Kristian K. Kjeldsen, and Svend Funder at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen; Shfaqat A. Khan of the National Space Institute, Technical University of Denmark; Camilla S. Andresen of the Department of Marine Geology and Glaciology at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland; and Nicolaj K. Larsen of the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University.

Photos, satellite images and other data for the study were provided by the National Survey and Cadastre; The Scott Polar Research Institute in the United Kingdom; the Arctic Institute in Denmark; researchers Bea Csatho and Sudhagar Nagarajan of the Geology Department at the University at Buffalo; and the NASA Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center at the USGS/Earth Resources Observation and Science Center of Sioux Falls, S.D. Andreas Pedersen of the Danish company MapWork wrote the script for the software used in the study.

Researchers at four of the country's leading universities are embarking on a low carbon engineering project that could transform the way cities are built, as well as the way we live in them, by taking a novel 'back-casting' approach to their study.

Led by Professor Chris Rogers, at the University of Birmingham's School of Engineering, the study will create visions of an alternative urban future with drastically reduced CO2 emissions then develop realistic and radical engineering solutions to achieve them in a socially acceptable way. Research will closely link people's social aspirations and wellbeing with the engineering of cities.

The UK government is committed to meeting its 2050 climate change target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent from 1990 levels.

Professor Rogers said: "Engineering of our cities has traditionally been a 'top-down' exercise, mainly because it's so very difficult to create a 'bottom-up' approach: solutions are created and society must either learn to work and live with them or choose to resist them.

"Our research is novel in that we start by imagining the future that we want for our cities, for example what does an 80 per cent carbon reduced Lancaster look like? We then work backwards to find out what combinations of engineering solutions, behavioural changes and technological developments are needed to make these alternative futures possible, while at the same time ensuring that the planet can still provide us with the resources we need. The ambition of our research programme is necessary to deal with the global challenges that we face."

Professor Rogers' research experience encompasses the Mapping the Underworld project to create a prototype multi-sensor device to detect and map the pipes that lie beneath our cities' streets without the need for excavation. Such technical advances will make utility service provision and streetworks more sustainable.

As the world undergoes the largest wave of urban growth in history, research that can provide visions of an alternative economically viable future for low carbon, sustainable development is crucial.

In 2008, for the first time in history, more than half the world's population was living in towns and cities. The UK was the first country in the world in which this happened. By the time of the 2001 census almost 80 per cent of the UK population was living in cities, today this figure has risen to 90 per cent.

By using focus groups, case studies, a city analysis methodology and other approaches in pioneering futures research, the researchers will create a roadmap that aims to drive future engineering thinking for decades to come. Its goal is to influence policy and be used by urban designers in the UK with the potential to be applied anywhere in the world.

The study has been made possible by a 6 million programme grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Programme grants are flexible grants made available to world-leading research teams aiming to address major research challenges.

Lancaster University, University College London and the University of Southampton are part of the five-year multidisciplinary research team.

Commercial partners include power and gas company E-ON, global engineering consultancy Halcrow, international engineering and construction company Costain, and the UK's rail operator Network Rail.

Lady Gaga cancels concert after Muslim protests

Dita Alangkara / AP

Muslim men shout slogans during a rally against U.S. pop singer Lady Gaga outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, Friday.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

Lady Gaga?has canceled a sell-out concert in Indonesia?amid security fears following threats from Muslim hardliners over her provocative outfits, it is reported.

Questions were raised about the ?Born This Way Ball? in Jakarta after the extremist Islamic Defenders Front predicted violence if it went ahead, calling the singer a ?devil?s messenger? who wears only a ?bra and panties? on stage, according to an Agence France-Presse report published by Al-Arabiya.

Concert promotion lawyer Minola Sebayang confirmed Sunday that the June 3 show had been canceled, The Associated Press reported.

Lady Gaga refused permit for Indonesia show following religious protests

He said: "With threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling off the concert. This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."?

Indonesia is a secular nation, but with a population of 240 million has more Muslims than any other country in the world.

American pop singer and songwriter Lady Gaga waves to the crowd upon her arrival in Manila, Philippines, earlier this month.

The Jakarta show would have been the biggest performance on Lady Gaga's Asian tour, and more than 50,000 tickets had been sold, the BBC reported.

Promoters said they would offer refunds.

According to music news site NME.com, the singer?s tour kicked off in controversy in April after authorities in Seoul, South Korea implemented a strict adults only policy at her show, banning anyone under the age of 18 from attending her first tour date.

Beryl hits Fla. as strongest May storm since 1908

Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall in Florida overnight amid a weekend of wild weather that included thunderstorms over D.C. forcing officials to cancel the annual Memorial Day concert and extreme heat causing one NASCAR driver's boot to "melt" midrace. NBC's Mike Seidel reports.

By msnbc.com staff, NBC News, weather.com and news services

Updated at 8:29 a.m. ET: Tropical Storm Beryl, downgraded to a depression on Monday, threatened to snarl traffic on Memorial Day, bringing?drenching rain, winds and the possibility of flooding to the southeastern U.S. coast.

The storm made landfall in Florida early Monday near Jacksonville Beach around 12:10 a.m. ET with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

NBC News reported that made Beryl the strongest May tropical cyclone to hit the U.S. since a hurricane that?hit the Outer Banks of North Carolina with winds of 75 mph on May 29, 1908. However, that fact speaks?more to the scarcity of tropical activity in May as opposed to Beryl's strength.?

Wind gusts in excess of 60 mph were reported along the northeast coast of Florida as Beryl roared ashore, causing some tree damage and triggering power outages, weather.com reported.

The weather system was expected to continue dumping rain over parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday. It was forecast to weaken as it moves inland Monday and Tuesday, and as a frontal system comes down from the Great Lakes, Beryl was expected to move out into the Atlantic Ocean.

"We're seeing about the best that Beryl has right now as far as its winds are concerned, with winds about 70 mph," forecaster Al Sandrik said late Sunday. "The model shows significant weakening of the storm in 12 hours."

But the weather system could complicate holiday traffic Monday after wrecking some Memorial Day weekend plans Sunday. It caused shoreline campers to pack up and head inland and led to the cancellation of some events.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect early Monday for coastal areas from Flagler Beach, Fla. to Edisto Beach, S.C. At?8 a.m. ET, the storm was?50 miles west of Jacksonville, Fla., and winds had decreased to?40 mph. A tropical storm warning was?earlier discontinued north of the Savannah River in Georgia.

'Stay alert'
Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as 12 inches. Forecasters said the storm surge and high tide could bring 2 to 4 feet of flooding in northeastern Florida and Georgia, and 1 to 2 feet in southern South Carolina.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott urged Florida residents in the affected areas to "stay alert and aware."

"Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain and winds, and it is vital to continue to monitor local news reports and listen to the advice of local emergency management officials," Scott said in a statement Sunday night.

Report: National Weather Service misappropriated $43 million

Campers at Cumberland Island, Ga., which is reachable only by boat, were told to leave by 4:45 p.m. Sunday. The island has a number of undeveloped beaches and forests popular with campers.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday's jazz festival and Memorial Day ceremony were canceled. Workers were also out clearing tree limbs and debris that could be tossed about by the storm's winds. Winds had already knocked down tree limbs and power lines in parts of coastal Georgia, leaving hundreds without electricity.

Rip currents
But business was booming at the Red Dog Surf Shop in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where customers flocked to buy boards and wax in anticipation of the storm's high waves. Officials along the coast warned of rip currents, waves and high tides ? all of which can be dangerous but also tend to attract adventurous surfers. The waters had already become dangerous in South Carolina, where rescuers were searching for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard said crews in Charleston Harbor rescued three people and a dog from a sinking recreational vessel late Sunday morning.

The storm will deliver a dose of much-needed rainfall to parts of the Southeast that are currently suffering from drought, according to weather.com

Northeast Florida is suffering "exceptional drought" and the?rain could soak the parched areas between northeastern Florida and southeastern North Carolina.?

The southeastern U.S. wasn't the only part of the country dealing with troublesome weather.

In Washington, the annual Memorial Day concert on the National Mall on Sunday night was cut short as a line of thunderstorms approached the District of Columbia from the northwest. Mike Musher of the National Weather Service said the thunderstorms developed over Pennsylvania as part of the weather system that created record high temperatures in the Midwest over the weekend.

Rich-poor divide bogs down UN climate talks

Developing nations say the industrialized world - responsible for most of the emissions historically - should bear the brunt of the emissions cuts while developed nations want to make sure that fast-growing economies like China and India don't get off too easy.

U.N.?climate?talks ran into gridlock Thursday as a widening rift between rich and poor countries risked undoing some advances made last year in the decades-long effort to control carbon emissions that scientists say are overheating the planet.

As so often in the slow-moving negotiations, the session in Bonn bogged down with disputes over technicalities. But at the heart of the discord was the larger issue of how to divide the burden of emissions cuts between developed and developing nations. Developing nations say the industrialized world - responsible for most of the emissions historically - should bear the brunt of the emissions cuts while developed nations want to make sure that fast-growing economies like China and India don't get off too easy. China is now the world's top polluter.

"There is a total stalemate," said Artur Runge-Metzger, the chief negotiator for the European Union.

The negotiations in Bonn were meant to build on a deal struck in December in Durban, South Africa, to create a new global?climate?pact by 2015 that would make both rich and poor nations rein in emissions caused by the burning of oil and other fossil fuels. But on the next-to-last day of two weeks of talks there was little sign of progress, as different interpretations emerged on what, exactly, was agreed upon last year.

"There is distrust and there is frustration in the atmosphere," Seyni Nafo, spokesman for a group of African countries, told The Associated Press.

The European Union claims China and other developing countries are backsliding on commitments made in Durban to bring the discussion on emissions cuts from both rich and poor nations into one forum, instead of the current structure, which has two parallel negotiation tracks. Developing countries - backed by?climateactivists - accuse the U.S., EU and other industrialized nations of trying to evade commitments made in previous negotiations and shift responsibilities for tackling?climate?change to the developing world.

"Developed countries like the U.S., Japan, Canada and Russia ... have consistently blocked references to the existing legal principles, while continuing to ignore the fact that their meager emission cut targets expose the world's most vulnerable people to?climate?change's devastating effects," said Mohamed Adow, a senior?climatechange adviser at Christian Aid.

Meanwhile, emissions are going up, not down.

The Paris-based International Energy Agency said Thursday that carbon emissions from fossil fuels reached a record high of 31.6 gigatons in 2011, a 3.2 percent increase from the year before.

Despite improving on its energy efficiency, China accounted for the biggest contribution to the global increase, with emissions growing by 720 million tons, or 9.3 percent, the IEA said.

U.S. emissions fell by 1.7 percent, "primarily due to ongoing switching from coal to natural gas in power generation and an exceptionally mild winter," the agency said, while Japan's emissions rose 2.4 percent as it increased the use of fossil fuels in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The IEA data also showed that India moved ahead of Russia to become the fourth largest CO2 emitter, behind China, the U.S. and the EU.

Since their launch in the early 1990s, the?U.N. talks have had little success reducing emissions of the heat-trapping gases that a large majority of?climate?scientists say are warming the Earth, with potentially devastating consequences for poor countries ill-prepared to deal rising sea levels, floods, droughts and other effects of a changing?climate.

Actions taken and pledged so far fall well short of what the?U.N. experts say is needed to achieve the goal of preventing global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.2 degrees Celsius) above current levels by the end of this century.

The only existing binding treaty, the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, was shunned by the U.S. because it doesn't impose any emissions targets on China, thus leaving out the two biggest carbon emitters on the globe. It was set to expire this year but countries agreed in Durban to extend it, though they haven't agreed on how long. Canada, Japan and Russia have refused to make any new commitments under Kyoto, meaning it only covers about 15 percent of global emissions.

edwin - BUSINESS NEVER TASTED SO GOOD: MARK WARREN ...

This is not Mark Warren.

In recent times, when we think of the word, ?Entrepreneur? we think of something flashy or maybe technology driven.? Sometimes what we fail to realize is that there are dozens of entrepreneurs in our communities who are just as happy and just as knowledgeable as those entrepreneurs we read about in Forbes.

?

Marcus Warren of Soulful D?Lites is an entrepreneur with an abundance of knowledge about business and the restaurant industry.? His restaurant, Soulful D?Lites is a cozy storefront on historical, 52nd Street in Philadelphia.? The humble restaurant is known for its tasty twist on traditional soul food with a menu mostly comprised of the type of seafood dishes that you?d expect from a five star restaurant including, stuffed salmon and sauteed shrimp.

?

But that?s just part of the story.? What Marcus was able to accomplish is something tangible.? He represents the person who made some tough, yet simple, decisions in his life that led him to a comfortable lifestyle where he?s his own boss and has an impact on his community.? Below is just a few of the words of wisdom I was able to steal from him during our conversation.? If you want more, Soulful D?lites is located at 1214 N. 52nd Street in Philadelphia, 215-877-4400.

Mark Warren, owner of Soulful D'Lites

Soulful D?Lites will also be at Entr?e THIS SUNDAY!? Tickets are on sale now at www.cgm.bigcartel.com.

?

CC: Please introduce yourself.

?

MW: Marcus Warren, the owner and proprietor of Soulful D?Lites. 1214 N. 52nd Street [Philadelphia, PA]

?

CC: Can you tell us about your process from idea to reality?

MW: Well, at most of the restaurants I used to work for, I was a supervisor or manager.? ? And one of the responsibilities was to come up with different ideas and different food products.? So eventually I started to feel like I knew more than my supervisor.? So I said, ?I?m going to open up my own place.?? I?m already doing everything anyway, so what the heck?

?

CC: How were you able to overcome the fear of risk when opening your restaurant?

?

MW: I really never had a fear of risk.? What I can say is that anybody I ever talked to that had their own business said that if you love it and you put 110% in it, you?re going to get 110% back.? That?s how I look at it.? If I?m working hard, if I?m doing the right thing, constantly trying to learn about the business, because you never know everything, you?re good.? It?s always good to compare notes with people that have been in the business longer than you.? I?ve been in the business for a long time and since I?ve always been successful at every company I worked for, why can?t I do it for myself?? I can?t see me not making it if I?m already doing it for someone else.? And you gotta have quality people.? Don?t just accept anybody to work for you.? That?ll save you a lot of headaches.? You?re already going to have headaches without worrying about your people.

CC: What are some specific steps for opening a restaurant?

?

MW: Whatever you know now, learn a little bit more lol.? Think about budgeting and where you?re going to get your product from.? Make sure you get certified with your Serve Save license and your Business Privilege license.? And basically you need to know what you?re going to sell so you gotta get your menu together.? When you think about locations, think about the people and what people are you aiming to pull into your restaurant.? So what type of menu are you talking about? Heart Healthy? Old Trends? Bistro?? What type of customer base are you trying to shoot for?? Blacks? Latinos? Or the whole spectrum.

?

CC: Being in an area where there are a lot of other restaurants and food stands, how are you able to maintain a close relationship with your customers?

MW: Well you gotta talk to them.? If they got a complaint, not only listen but fix the problem.? You can?t just listen and not do anything about it.? Because one thing I realized is that the food business is tough.? A lot of times you can?t please everybody but you never stop trying.? To find out what the people want, you have to talk to them.? Sometimes I can?t get up to the front because we?re busy and I?m in the back but as much as I can, I try to come up front and speak with the people to see what they dislike or what can be improved.? Sometimes they just want you to add to what you already have.

?

CC: What are some of the more popular items on your menu?

?

MW: We sell a lot of salmon burgers, cornbread, turkey wings, the yams, collard greens.? We have a pan-seared spicy honey salmon and shrimp that they like.? Um, mussel scampi and we have a nice stuffed tilapia that?s sauteed and stuffed with sauteed spinach and shrimp.

?

CC: If I?m opening up a restaurant, what hurdles do I have to look out for?

MW: If you?re leasing other people?s property make sure that you can really handle the lease.? And that means knowing what the area is going for compared to what other businesses in the area are paying.? Make sure you have backup money if things are not quite working out so you can pay the lease until things pick up.? They don?t just pick right so you gotta have that backup money.? Me personally, I couldn?t get a loan but I had a little money saved up.? It wasn?t enough so I went back to working three jobs.? I worked two full time jobs and a part time job on the weekend.? I got tired of people telling me, ?no? so I did it myself.? I had the bare essentials and for three years straight, I just saved money.? You have to sacrifice something if you want this to happen.? Even if you get a loan from a bank, they?re not just going to give it to you.? You have to have something saved so they see that you?re striving to make this dream happen yourself.? So you have to really want it.

?

CC: What are your future plans?

?

MW: One of my next levels in the business is getting a bigger property.? I want it to be three floors.? A restaurant, take-out and delivery service on the first floor.? Second floor, catering hall / banquet hall and on the third floor, a night club / cafe.? And I want to have it so that we can throw different shows weekly with up and coming artists.? And I want to have something that?ll have entrepreneurs pull in young adults and show them the business.? Not just talk to them, but start them from the bottom and work your way to the top, like a real internship.? Let them really see the good and the bad in the business so they can make their way from there.? And we need to focus on our own people because a lot of us don?t have that mentality.? They say, ?I just want to get a job.?? It?s nothing wrong with that but how about if you create the job to give to somebody else?? If you?re a business owner, you don?t need a job because you?ve created one.

CC: Any last advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

?

MW: A few things.? If that?s what you want to do don?t let anybody tell you you can?t do it.? You have to sacrifice something if you want to make it happen.? And keep honest people around you that want to work.? It?s always good to talk to other business people that way you can learn things and add to what you know.? Never stop learning and every chance you get look at other businesses like yours to get ideas.? Not necessarily their ideas but something that you can add your own spin on to upgrade your business.? And just constantly improve your business so that it can grow.
