Yale president to step down after 20 years

Yale University President Richard Levin will step down at the end of the academic year after 20 years at the helm of the Ivy League school.

Levin, 65, has been Yale's president since 1993 and has served at the New Haven university longer than any other current Ivy League president, noted Reuters. As president, he oversaw Yale's largest building and renovation program since the 1930s and started the expansion of the university's financial aid programs.

More from GlobalPost:?Yale defends restrictions on protests at Singapore campus

"It is a source of great satisfaction to leave Yale in much stronger condition ? academically, physically, and financially ? than it was when I began in 1993," Levin said, according to Reuters.

Yale is expected to undertake a nationwide search for a successor, who will take the helm of the $3 billion-a-year operating budget university next summer, reported The New York Times. Levin said he simply felt it was time to move on and that he planned to take a one-year sabbatical to write a book.

"Rick Levin is simply one of the world's great leaders," Yale trustee Indra Nooyi, chief executive of PepsiCo, said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. "He has been transformational in envisioning how a university should be a leading citizen in its home community and he has boldly staked out how the leading universities should become global institutions. His example has been a guide for how universities around the world can have a much greater impact."

Cyber spying spreads in Iran after operation blown: researchers

BOSTON (Reuters) - The scope of a cyber espionage campaign targeting Iran and other parts of the Middle East has widened, even after security experts blew the operation's cover last month, according to the research firm that discovered the Mahdi Trojan.

Israeli security company Seculert said it had identified about 150 new victims over the past six weeks as developers of the Mahdi virus had changed the code to evade detection by anti-virus programs. That has brought the total number of infections found so far to nearly 1,000, the bulk of them in Iran.

"These guys continue to work," Seculert Chief Technology Officer Aviv Raff said via telephone from the company's headquarters in Israel.

The decision to keep the operation running implies that Mahdi's operators were not particularly worried about getting caught, said Roel Schouwenberg, a senior researcher with Kaspersky Lab, which has collaborated with Seculert to analyze Mahdi.

Schouwenberg said some viruses are designed for stealth because they become useless if they are discovered. He pointed to the Stuxnet Trojan that targeted Iran's nuclear program in 2010. After that customer-built virus was uncovered by a security researcher in Belarus, authorities in Iran discovered it in a uranium enrichment facility that it had targeted.

Mahdi is a "less professional" operation that runs on technology built with widely available software, according to Schouwenberg.

"If the quality of your operation is not that high, then maybe you don't care about being discovered," he said. "But the scary thing is that it can still be effective."

The Mahdi Trojan allows remote attackers to steal files from infected PCs, and monitor emails and instant messages, Seculert and Kaspersky said. It can also record audio, log keystrokes and take screen shots of activity on those computers.

The firms said they believed multiple gigabytes of data have been uploaded from targeted machines.

Targets of Mahdi include critical infrastructure firms, engineering students, financial services firms and government embassies located in five Middle Eastern countries, with the majority of the infections in Iran, according to the two security firms.

The bulk of the new victims were also in Iran, according to Seculert, though a few were identified in the United States and Germany.

The two firms have declined to identify specific victims.

Seculert's Raff said he suspected the campaign was being run by hacker activists, or "hactivists," who were either funded by a government or who provide information they collect to a nation for ideological reasons. He declined to say which country might be involved.

Seculert and Kaspersky dubbed the campaign Mahdi after a term referring to the prophesied redeemer of Islam because evidence suggests the attackers used a folder with that name as they developed the software to run the project.

They also included a text file named mahdi.txt in the malicious software that infected target computers.

Sikh temple holds service week after attack

OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) ? Hundreds of people gathered at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee spoke of redemption, unity and strength during the first Sunday service there since a gunman killed six people before fatally shooting himself.

The service capped a weekend of events meant to honor the victims and restore the temple as a place of worship. While there were still tears and red eyes, many participants said healing was under way.

Visitors removed their shoes outside and filed past portraits of the victims, shuffling down a flower-lined aisle into the main prayer room. They dropped dollar bills in front of a shrine where their holy book sits and bowed for two to three seconds. Then they sat on the floor ?women on the left, men on the right ? their heads covered with scarves, and listened as a priest recited religious hymns in the Hindi dialect of Punjabi.

Those at Sunday's service included Sikhs from as far away as California and about 50 from Cleveland, who chartered a bus to make the eight-hour drive to support their community.

"It's an emotional day but it's getting better," said Justice Khalsa, 41, of Milwaukee, who visits the temple three or four days a week. "I'm smiling and laughing now, but once this group goes away and we're back to our regular schedule, it will be haunting, I'm sure."

The proceedings began in the parking lot with a "nishan sahib," or a ceremony in which participants clean a Sikh flagpole to symbolize the temple's rebirth.

Women sang hymns as a group lowered the pole. About 50 people, mostly men and boys, unwrapped a faded orange cloth that covered the pole, washed the pole with water and milk and then rewrapped it with a darker orange cloth. The group then filed inside the temple for more prayers and hymns.

Wade Michael Page, 40, used a 9 mm pistol to kill six people and would four others, including a police officer, in an ambush that took place shortly before a service was to begin Aug. 5. He shot himself after being wounded by another police officer.

Page, an Army veteran with a record of minor alcohol-related crimes and a spotty employment history, had performed with several bands associated with white supremacists and neo-Nazi groups. Still, investigators say they may never know for certain what prompted his attack.

When relatives gathered to plan Friday's memorial for the six who died, several wanted to include a seventh empty coffin to remember Page.

"It would have sent a message that we have forgiven this man for his actions," said Amardeep Singh, the son of one victim. "We forgave him because otherwise it would have been a thorn in our side for the rest of our lives."

The idea was eventually scuttled, and most at the temple Sunday seemed to content to forget about Page.

"He should not be discussed," Khalsa said. "People like that aren't important. They don't deserve attention. We're concentrating on the people who lost their lives."

Temple officials unveiled a simple but powerful memorial to the victims. While leaders had repaired most of the damage to the temple, they left one dime-sized bullet hole unrepaired. Beneath it they installed a small gold plate engraved with "We Are One. 8-5-12"

The hole, a door jamb near the main prayer room, is meant to remind visitors of the victims: the temple president, three priests and two worshippers, as well as a police officer and three others who were injured.

It was in their memory that Amarjit Singh Kang, 48, organized the charter bus from Cleveland. He said attendees didn't think twice about whether to make the trip.

"It's important we all be together," he said.

8 Ways To Brand Yourself As A SME | Business 2 Community

(even if you?re a Generalist)

As I discussed in earlier articles, branding yourself as a generalist doesn?t work in today?s search driven market of job shortages and mass competition.

Today?s employers don?t even hire generalists for jobs requiring a generalist. Employers hire subject matter expertise first, then choose the subject matter expert who also has the best ability to adapt to new situations (discovered during the interview).

So what should you do if you?re a generalist?

If your career consists of wearing many hats, you run into special job search problems today. Fortunately there are a number of ways to brand yourself as a subject matter expert, even if you?re a generalist.

Here?s 8 ways to brand yourself as a SME:

  1. Self-perception: Part of it just comes down to your own self-perception. If you perceive yourself as a generalist, it will be difficult to convince a hiring manager of your subject matter expertise. Choose a few of the things you do better than anyone else, assuming they are marketable (I?m not sure there are many jobs that demand expertise in burping the alphabet), these are your subject matter expertises.
  2. Focus: You don?t have to explain every moment you were at work ? your resume isn?t a time card. Instead, focus on the specific things included in your work that relate to your subject matter expertise. You can include the hundreds of other things you did at points of your resume that get less reader attention.
  3. Selectivity: Choose 2-3 subject matter expertises, not 10+. Not even The Most Interesting Man In The World is an expert at 10 different things. He was an SME of just a few things at a time ? over a very long time (He once ran a marathon because it was on his way home). Stay thirsty, my friends ?
  4. Selectivity, part 2: Consider leaving items off your resume that don?t support the subject matter expertise you chose. So if you?re a subject matter expert in call centers, do you think it will help your branding by including the details of your first job out of college, selling copiers door-to-door? Listing the position makes sense, but listing the details shows that you put similar emphasis on that first job as your most recent job, 20 years later and 4 management levels higher. It just doesn?t make sense, yet many job seekers just don?t know a better way.
  5. Emphasis: Emphasize the specific achievements that support your subject matter expertise. De-emphasize (or leave off completely) the other tasks involved with your job that don?t relate to the SME you?re focusing on.
  6. Recency: Choose a subject matter expertise that?s reasonably recent. This doesn?t mean that it has to be your most recent job, but you?ll have a tough time convincing anyone that you?re an expert in something you did 20 years ago. Employers realize that someone who is doing the same job right now will remember far more, will be up to date, and probably won?t require any training or ramp up time. If you?re trying to sell experience you had 20 years ago, you will need to get current on the job function/industry and probably require re-training and ramp-up time ? making you a poor choice from an employers? point of view. For example, I?m a CPA, but you wouldn?t want me to do your taxes ? I haven?t done taxes since the ?80?s.
  7. Resume Real Estate: If you want to emphasize something further back than your most recent job, you?ll want to use your resume?s real estate to help draw attention to the experience you want the reader to focus on ? and draw attention away from less relevant experience. Readers will naturally give more attention to the largest chunks of your resume. This means to expand the footprint of your most relevant experience, while shrinking the footprint of your less relevant experience. Most candidates don?t write their resumes this way, giving the largest amount of real estate to recent work, whether relevant to the reader ? or not.
  8. Consistency: Make sure that the branding you choose for your resume is consistent with the branding you choose for your social media profiles. This means that if you?re a subject matter expert in tiddlywinks on your resume, you don?t want to brand yourself as a generalist or as a ping pong subject matter expert on Social Media. Over 90% of employers check social media profiles prior to making an offer and one of the main things they are looking for is consistency.

You aren?t forced into a brand ? you create it.

So why feel like you?re forced into branding yourself as a subject matter expert when you can select a portion of your overall experience to use as your brand?

? It?s all in how you choose to present yourself.

Democratic Party platform group backs gay marriage

DETROIT (AP) ? The national Democratic Party's platform committee endorsed gay marriage Saturday for the first time and called for the repeal of a federal law that recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman.

The committee, meeting in downtown Detroit, let stand the work of a separate group that drafted the platform two weeks ago in Minneapolis. The platform is a broad statement of the party's priorities on the economy, social issues and national defense and next goes to the national convention in North Carolina in September.

Scott Dibble, a committee member and a state senator from Minnesota, said support for gay marriage can attract new voters.

"Young people are looking for a political home right now. This has become a defining moral question of our time," said Dibble, who is gay.

The platform says Democrats support "marriage equality" and the "movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples."

"We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference," the platform says.

In May, President Barack Obama said he personally supported gay marriage.

"This certainly been a journey for many people in this country, a journey for our president," Dibble told fellow committee members from across the country.

The platform also calls for repeal of a 1996 law, signed by Democratic President Bill Clinton, which recognizes marriage as between a man and woman. Some federal courts have struck it down as unconstitutional.

Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker, co-chairman of the platform committee, said there are "profound indignities" heaped on people who can't marry someone of the same sex.

"At the end of the day it'll maybe repel some and attract others to be more engaged," Booker told reporters, referring to the platform plank. "This campaign is not going to turn on gay marriage. This campaign is going to turn on who has the best ideas for the economy."

Nudist park holds bash to attract younger crowd

LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. (AP) ? Nudist resorts have a reputation for attracting older adults, but one Florida park is trying to change that.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://sunsent.nl/RAS2ZV) reports Sunsport Gardens will hold a weekend bash aimed at attracting nudists ages 18 to 30. The Florida Young Naturist's Fourth Annual End of Summer Naked Bash is slated to be a celebration of nudity and body acceptance.

Sunsport Gardens principal shareholder Morley Schloss tells the paper the park has been trying to bring in younger members with lower prices, 24-hour hot tubs and Friday night drum circles.

The gathering at the 40-acre Loxahatchee park is expected to gather several hundred young adults. Nudist resorts around the country have been working to attract a younger crowd.

NSW Inquiry into Construction Industry Insolvency ? 9 August 2012 ...

Yesterday the NSW Government announced an inquiry into ?construction industry insolvency?. The inquiry comes in the wake of a spate of construction company insolvencies in the state. NSW Minister for Finance and Services, Greg Pearce provided some telling statistics on point. The Minister said ?Between 2009 and 2011, hundreds of companies in NSW collapsed owing billions of dollars, slamming the brakes on vital projects and investment?.Up to 24,000 unsecured creditors, including suppliers and sub-contractors, have been left out-of-pocket, some by millions of dollars.?? Furthermore the construction industry in NSW accounts for 15% of business in NSW but 30% of the companies that are going into administration. The Minister attested to the need for a government inquiry into this problematic scenario stating the fragility of the construction industry was taking a toll on workers, the economy and the community.

The inquiry will be chaired by Mr. Bruce Collins QC, who has extensive experience in commercial law, engineering and construction law. The inquiry will focus on assessing the causes of insolvency in the construction industry and the current payment practices affecting sub contractors. The full terms of reference for the inquiry have been published by the NSW government and include a list of legislative and policy considerations that the inquiry will consider pertaining to the payment framework of sub contractors. To access the full terms of reference or media release from the NSW government please click here.

The NSW government has stated that they wish to hear from all interested parties in particular contractors and sub contractors. Please click here if you wish to make a submission and be forwarded to the NSW Government website. The consultation period will close on Friday the 14th of September.

Despite the Rise of Digital, the Videogames Business Is Not All Fun ...

Never mind Zynga?s problems. Even legacy game companies like Electronic Arts, Activision, Take-Two Interactive and THQ are taking their lumps.

And here?s the simple reason why: Despite all the new categories being built over the past two years ? like social and phone and tablet gaming ? consumers are still spending less than they used to on videogames.

Anita Frazier at the NPD Group said the gains that digital gaming formats are realizing were not quite enough to offset a 16 percent drop in consumer spending during the second quarter.

Right now, the industry is close to a break-even point, with half of its sales coming from digital and half coming from software. It?s just enough to make the argument that companies should be investing in digital, but basically not enough for them to be rewarded for it,?especially?with standalone?entities like Zynga eating up most of the profits in one?category.

In the second quarter, $1.39 billion was spent by U.S. consumers on videogame software for consoles and PCs, including new, rental and used sales. In the other category, which includes digital downloads, subscriptions, mobile and social, sales in the second quarter totaled $1.47 billion, NPD Group said.

In June, those trends continued, with consumers spending?a total of $1.1 billion, of which $439 million came from?digital sales.

Based on how history tells it, the industry is fueled by cycles, with new hardware resulting in a jump in software sales.?But the current generation of consoles are hitting their seventh year, which means that consumers have started to get tired of their ancient systems, and have started to slow their spending. Only one console maker, Nintendo, has plans to launch new hardware ? the Wii U ? in time for?Christmas.

After two straight weeks of earnings reports, this trend is obvious.

Last week, Take-Two Interactive disappointed analysts with a wider than expected loss,?Activision was down compared to the prior year,?Electronic Arts? results?showed signs of weakness, and the week before,?Zynga shocked investors?after wildly missing expectations.

Frazier said in July that there was only one hardware platform that experienced an increase in sales compared to last year: Nintendo?s portable game unit, the 3DS. This month, we can look forward to a potential lift from the release of Nintendo?s 3DS XL, which boasts a bigger screen.

Otherwise, it?s Microsoft?s Xbox that is sweeping up the?remnants?in the space. But increasingly, the console is being used to stream video and other content to users? TVs ? not to play games.

Microsoft said that, based on the NPD results, it sold?203,000 units in July, which was more units than any gaming hardware. It currently holds?49 percent market share?of current-generation consoles, and total spending?on platform in July (including hardware, software and accessories) reached?$218 million. At that rate,?consumers spent more on Xbox 360 products in July than they spent on the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3 combined.

OUYA Gaming Console Now Up for Pre-Order, $109 with Expected ...

The Kickstarter for OUYA, the Android-powered gaming console, officially ended last night with a final total of money raised somewhere near $8.5 million. Dang. If somehow you missed out on backing this Tegra 3 powered game console, you can now pre-order a device from OUYA themselves starting today.?

If you are in the United States, $109 will get you a console and a controller, which includes all the shipping costs. If you are elsewhere, tack on an extra $10 and you will be all set. OUYA definitely has the right vision in taking on the established console giants, but it remains to be seen whether the devices will get out the door quickly enough to still be relevant.

Would you take this console over the next generation Xbox or PlayStation?

Elder Care Help: How to Discuss Your Parent's Healthcare

StethoscopeLast week we spoke about the importance of becoming involved in your parents? healthcare as they age. But how do you know when it is the right time to step in and take an active role in your elder?s healthcare. What?s more, where do you begin? Bass Eldercare is here to provide elder care help.

When Should You Get Involved in Your Parent?s Healthcare?

The answer to the question above is highly varied depending on your family dynamic and individual circumstances, but there are a few situations in which any adult child should step in and discuss healthcare with his or her parent.

  • After a Medical Emergency ? Whether it?s a bad fall or a heart attack, any medical emergency is both scary and eye opening for elder care givers. Even if this is an isolated incident and you and your elder don?t feel quite ready for long term care planning, this is the prime time to sit down and have an open discussion with your parent about his or her healthcare. Honestly talk about any concerns you may have and develop a contingency plan should any other medical emergencies occur in the future.
  • After a Spouse has Passed Away ? A spouse is typically a sounding board in the decision making process for every aspect of life. When your elder?s spouse passes on, your elder caregiving responsibilities will increase, including taking a more active role in your parent?s healthcare. This is a difficult time for both you and your elder, so be sure to ask for elder care help when you need it to avoid burn out.
  • When an Elder Moves to Assisted Living ? When you and your elder are discussing a potential move to assisted living, make sure that his or her health care is a prominent talking point. Along with the community feel, elder care help with daily health care activities is often a deciding factor for the move. Aside from top notch health care assistance, you will want to make sure that you choose a reputable facility where your elder feels comfortable and at home.

Where Do You Start?

No matter the reason for elder care givers becoming involved in their parent?s healthcare, the process should always begin with a candid discussion. Both you and your elder should raise any specific healthcare concerns you may have. Ask your elder if he or she would be comfortable with the two of you talking to his or her doctor together to ensure that you have a full idea of the state of your elder?s healthcare. Next, you should talk about his or her insurance. Finally, develop a plan for medical emergencies ? who are the emergency contacts, is a system such as Life Alert necessary, etc.

If a Google Employee Dies, Spouse Gets Half of Salary for 10 Years

It's been long reported that Google treats its employees well, from offering them free food and fitness classes to laundry service and car washes. But according to a recent report, Google recently announced death benefits to employees, including a generous offer to pay the spouse or partner of a decreased staffer half of their salary for a decade.

The news of these death benefits -- which was first reported by Forbes -- also comes with "no tenure requirement," which means each employee in its 34,000 workforce qualifies. It was put into place earlier this year.

Mashable confirmed with a Google spokesperson that the benefits don't just stop at salary. The surviving spouse or partner of a deceased employee will also acquire vested stock benefits, and children will receive $1,000 a month until the age of 19. The timeline can be extended if the child is in school full time.

Google said it is taking this approach because it is the right thing to do, ensuring that each employee's family is taken care of if an unforeseeable event were to occur -- even if there is no direct benefit to the business.

Although it might attract more candidates to apply for a position, Google said that is not the reason why it implemented the benefits -- more potential hires would just be a side effect.
