Influenza A virus infection of healthy piglets in an abattoir in Brazil: animal-human interface and risk for interspecies transmission.

Asymptomatic influenza virus infections in pigs are frequent and the lack of measures for controlling viral spread facilitates the circulation of different virus strains between pigs. The goal of this study was to demonstrate the circulation of influenza A virus strains among asymptomatic piglets in an abattoir in Brazil and discuss the potential public health impacts. Tracheal samples (n = 330) were collected from asymptomatic animals by a veterinarian that also performed visual lung tissue examinations. No slaughtered animals presented with any noticeable macroscopic signs of influenza infection following examination of lung tissues. Samples were then analysed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction that resulted in the identification of 30 (9%) influenza A positive samples. The presence of asymptomatic pig infections suggested that these animals could facilitate virus dissemination and act as a source of infection for the herd, thereby enabling the emergence of influenza outbreaks associated with significant economic losses. Furthermore, the continuous exposure of the farm and abattoir workers to the virus increases the risk for interspecies transmission. Monitoring measures of swine influenza virus infections and vaccination and monitoring of employees for influenza infection should also be considered. In addition regulatory agencies should consider the public health ramifications regarding the potential zoonotic viral transmission between humans and pigs.

Report: Manziel being probed by NCAA over profiting on autographs

According to a report by ESPN, Johnny Manziel is under investigation by the NCAA for accepting money in exchange for autographs. (Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports)

Johnny Manziel's crazy offseason since winning the Heisman Trophy has created plenty of headlines but has had little impact on what was expected from Texas A&M on the field.

That may have changed Sunday.

According to ESPN's "Outside the Lines," Manziel is being investigated by the NCAA for being paid for signing autographs on photos and sports memorabilia while he was attending the BCS National Championship in Miami in January. According to the report, Manziel was paid a five-figure fee for the signing.

If the NCAA finds that Manziel violated NCAA rules by accepting money for promoting or advertising the commercial sale of a product or service (NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.1), Manziel could be ruled ineligible.

Just last week in an article in Sports Illustrated, Manziel said signing autographs was the No. 1 stressor in his life. Manziel said he's been approached by family members, school officials, teammates, friends as well as those who have tried to profit from his signature.

If the Aggies lost Manziel, it would be a huge blow. Manziel's backup last season, Jameill Showers, transferred to UTEP.? Junior Matt Joeckel, the twin brother of first-round pick Luke Joeckel, is listed as No. 2 on the A&M depth chart. Joeckel played in five games in 2012, throwing a total of 12 passes.

The Aggies have media day Monday and their first practice. Manziel was originally listed as one of the seven players who could possibly be attending the media day pending summer class schedules. The school released an updated list Sunday and Manziel was no longer on it.

The school is not commenting on the investigation.

"It is Texas A&M's longstanding practice not to respond to such questions concerning specific student-athletes," a release from the school read.

The Aggies, who open the season Aug. 31 vs. Rice, are the preseason No. 6 team according to the USA Today coaches' poll. That's the highest the Aggies have been ranked in the preseason since 1995.

Galaxy Note III SM-N9005 Emerges in Benchmarks

As September approaches, more and more evidence for the existence of the Galaxy Note III smartphone is making its way to the web, and it seems that Samsung?s upcoming large device has made it online once again, with LTE connectivity packed inside.

Supposedly set to make an official appearance at the IFA 2013 trade show in Berlin on September 4, Galaxy Note III was spotted in AnTuTu with a Snapdragon 800 processor, support for LTE networks and model number SM-N9005 attached.

Running under Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the smartphone features a 2.3GHz CPU, yet shows lower benchmarking scores than what the chip can deliver, SamMobile notes.

The upcoming device is also rumored to arrive on shelves with 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel photo snapper on the back, support for LTE-A and a better TouchWiz UI loaded on top of Android.

Google introduces City Experts program to promote better local reviews

DNP Google introduces the City Experts program to promote better local reviews

In an effort to raise the bar on local reviews, Google has just announced the launch of the City Experts program, open to Google+ users with at least 50 reviews under their belts. To maintain membership, City Experts must write a minimum of five reviews per month that meet Google's standards for quality. Said standards aren't particularly strenuous; City Experts are expected to produce three or four sentences that give an accurate and substantial impression of the businesses they're reviewing. To encourage people to sign up, the company is offering a slew of goodies, like custom Google swag, invitations to local events and exclusive offers in the program's monthly newsletter. If nothing tickles your fancy more than slamming or praising businesses in your area, you can sign up at the source link below.

Apple?s supplier Pegatron Group violates workers? rights

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 29, 2013

Today, China Labor Watch (CLW) published an investigative report detailing the labor violations of three factories of Pegatron Group, a major supplier to Apple. In 2013, Apple has increased its orders to these factories, which have benefitted from and relied upon labor violations to increase their competitive edge.

CLW?s investigations revealed at least 86 labor rights violations, including 36 legal violations and 50 ethical violations. The violations fall into 15 categories: dispatch labor abuse, hiring discrimination, women?s rights violations, underage labor, contract violations, insufficient worker training, excessive working hours, insufficient wages, poor working conditions, poor living conditions, difficulty in taking leave, labor health and safety concerns, ineffective grievance channels, abuse by management, and environmental pollution.

In short, the Pegatron factories are violating a great number of international and Chinese laws and standards as well as the standards of Apple?s own social responsibility code of conduct.

In May 2013, Apple heralded that its suppliers had achieved 99 percent compliance with Apple?s 60-hour workweek rule, this despite the fact that 60 hours is a direct violation of China?s 49-hour statutory limit.? This ?accomplishment? is further discredited by the fact that average weekly working hours in the three factories probed by CLW are approximately 66 hours, 67 hours, and 69 hours, respectively. For instance, in Pegatron Shanghai, our investigation uncovered that workers were forced to sign forms indicating that their overtime hours were less than the actual levels.

Indeed, a number of Apple?s social responsibility promises are being broken, including those related to worker safety, protecting the environment, and more. None of the Pegatron factories investigated here, for example, provide sufficient safety training to workers. At Riteng and AVY, waste water is disposed of directly into the sewage system, polluting the local water source.

Conditions at these factories are so poor that most workers refuse to continue working for long. In a period of two weeks, 30 of 110 new recruits at AVY left.

Apple continues to source from Pegatron factories despite serious labor rights violations. That Apple has made promises on the conduct of its suppliers means that Apple is complicit in the persistence of violations at these factories.

Apple has zero tolerance for lapses in the quality of its products. If a quality issue arises, Apple will do everything it can to have it corrected immediately. But a lower level of urgency apparently applies in responding to labor rights abuses. Despite its professed high standards for the treatment of Apple workers, serious labor violations have persisted year after year. Apple must prioritize its efforts into halting the abuse of the workers making Apple products.

CLW executive director Li Qiang said, ?Our investigations have shown that labor conditions at Pegatron factories are even worse than those at Foxconn factories. Apple has not lived up to its own standards. This will lead to Apple?s suppliers abusing labor in order to strengthen their position for receiving orders. In this way, Apple is worsening conditions for workers, not improving them.?

The report brings this issue into sharp relief by comparing 17 social promises that Apple has made with 17 corresponding realities uncovered during CLW?s investigation.

From March to July 2013, CLW sent investigators into the three Pegatron Group factories to carry out undercover investigations and conduct nearly 200 interviews with workers outside the factories. The factories included Pegatron Shanghai (producing the iPhone), Riteng (a Pegatron subsidiary in Shanghai producing Apple computers), and AVY (a Pegatron subsidiary in Suzhou producing iPad parts). Together, these three Pegatron factories have more than 70,000 employees.

The full report can be here.

A CLW-produced short film can be found here.

About China Labor Watch:

Founded in 2000, China Labor Watch is an independent not-for-profit organization.?In the past ten years, CLW has collaborated with labor organizations and the media to conduct a series of in-depth assessments of factories in China that produce toys, bikes, shoes, furniture, clothing, and electronics for some of the largest companies. CLW?s New York office creates reports from these investigations, educates the international community on supply chain labor issues, and pressures corporations to improve conditions for workers.?

[News] Google Drive blurs the line between Windows and the web with new desktop shortcuts

Google's unrelenting march into Microsoft's turf continues.

A mere two weeks after the release of the Chrome App Launcher for Windows--Google's backdoor into the offline world, basically--the company has announced that when Windows users install the desktop version of Google Drive, it will automatically dump shortcuts for Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Drive on your desktop, along with one for your Drive-based online storage.

Double-clicking on one of those icons opens up the associated web app. After signing in to your Google account you're free to powerhouse through your productivity tasks, and all your work will automatically save to the cloud, the Google Drive team explained in a Google+?post. These simple desktop links could prove handy indeed for non-techies or people who chose to live their lives in Google's free, cloud-connected ecosystem, especially if you configure the Drive family of apps to work offline.

Taking the online onto the desktop

While default shortcut dumps are evil incarnate and should be cast back into the depths from which they spawned, Google's move is actually pretty savvy. Not only do the shortcuts reinforce the fact that Drive is a full productivity suite rather than a simple cloud storage box, but like the Chrome app launcher, they also keep Google's service in your face. Plus, the shortcuts further muddle the increasingly blurry line between the desktop and the open web.

"For quite some time, we've had a dichotomy between web apps and native apps, and one of the things that sets them apart is the ability [for native apps] to be launched from the desktop and have a degree of persistence and independence from the browser," Ross Rubin, principal analyst at Reticle Research, told PCWorld when the Chrome App Launcher was released. "...People want to interact with their web apps as easily as they do with their desktop apps."

The Chrome App Launcher helps to break down those walls, and now, so will these Drive-related shortcuts.

And Google? Well, Google makes its money by tossing ads at your eyeballs when you're on the web. Check out PCWorld's Chrome App Launcher analysis for the full scoop on what Google stands to gain by dumping web apps on your desktop, and look for the Google Drive installation tweak to roll out sometime in the next week.

Democratic governors nervous about health plan

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Democratic governors say they are nervous about getting the new federal health care law implemented but add they will be better positioned in next year's elections than many of their Republican counterparts who have resisted the far-reaching and politically polarizing measure.

Several of the 12 Democratic governors shared that sense of nervousness-veiled-by-optimism at the National Governors Association in Milwaukee Saturday.

"There's some angst, and you can see that from the decision the administration made a couple weeks ago," said Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. "There's a lot of work to do."

By next Jan. 1, most people will be required to have insurance. States have to set up exchanges by Oct. 1, when uninsured individuals can start buying subsidized private health coverage that would go into effect Jan 1, and businesses with more than 50 employees working 30 or more hours a week were supposed to offer affordable health care to their workers or risk a series of escalating tax penalties.

But businesses said they needed more time, and on July 2, President Barack Obama's administration abruptly extended the deadline one year ? to Jan. 1, 2015.

That caused some Democrats in Congress to worry the program would not be ready on time, as states are building online platforms for their residents to use to comply with the law. Although the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in June 2012, the Republican-controlled House has voted 40 times since Obama signed the law in 2010 to repeal, defund or scale it back, most recently Friday.

As Congress prepared to head home for a five-week recess, Obama sought to calm jittery Democrats, assuring them that they are "on the right side of history" despite problems with the law's launch.

Republicans have stated openly they plan to use the slow economic recovery and the health care law to attack Democrats in the 2014 congressional elections.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the governors' host and a possible 2016 Republican presidential prospect, said Obama delayed the employer mandate out of fear voters would blame Democrats in the 2014 elections if the economy suffered as a result of the new law.

"A cynic would be right to say the reason they pushed back the employer mandate had little to nothing to do with policy and everything to do with politics," Walker said.

Most of the two dozen governors from both parties gathered at the conference expressed confidence that their states would be ready on time, especially Democrats, although they said the work is daunting.

"Any time you go and make this much change in this short a period of time, it does cause headaches," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said.

But with that pain comes progress, Hickenlooper and others argued. And those Republicans who have resisted or delayed taking action will pay the price.

Long before election day, the philosophical debate over the bill will have turned into a practical reality for millions of newly insured voters.

"Choosing ideology over jobs and affordable health care is a false choice, and it's an example of the differences between Republicans and Democrats," Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, said.

Among the challenges states are encountering are the technological requirements to allow buyers to search for insurers, rates and benefits on the exchanges. Others are training state employees to administer the program and marketing it to millions of Americans, all during a time of strained state budgets. Marketing employees were often among the first to lose their jobs.

Despite the headaches, the alternative to the status quo is far worse, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said.

"Nothing could be more complicated than doing what we were doing before, which was to throw away more and more money on more expensive care for worse results," said O'Malley, a Democrat also mulling a 2016 White House run.

(AP) ? A topping-out ceremony was held Saturday for China's tallest building in the financial hub of Shanghai when the final beam was hoisted to the top of the skyscraper and installed in a flag-waving ritual.

At 632 meters (2,073 feet), the Shanghai Tower in the city's Pudong district is the world's second-tallest building, surpassed only by Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which soars 829.8 meters (2,722 feet).

After the ceremony, workers will move onto the building's interior construction. Once it is completed next year, the Shanghai Tower will have retail and office space, a luxury hotel and likely a museum.

"I'm very proud," Wu Weiming, who helped installed the last beam, told reporters.

Designed by U.S. architectural firm Gensler, the glass-and-steel, 121-story building takes on a transparent and spiral form.

China's booming economy has fuelled a building frenzy, including some of the world's tallest buildings. The Shanghai Tower replaces the Shanghai World Financial Center ? completed in 2008 ? as the country's highest building.

The Shanghai Tower is the last piece in a group of super-tall skyscrapers in Shanghai's Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, which includes the Shanghai World Financial Center and Jin Mao Tower, both among the tallest in the world.

And in the south-central city of Changsha, developers are in the midst of building Sky City, an 838-meter (2,749-foot) structure that would overtake Burj Khalifa.

This summer, China also unveiled the world's largest building in terms of floor space in the western city of Chengdu. The New Century Global Center edged out the previous record-holder, the Dubai airport.

Fallon rocks 'Blurred Lines' with Robin Thicke

TV

Who knew children's musical instruments could be employed to make the summer's No. 1 hit sound ... well, even better? Jimmy Fallon, that's who. And when Robin Thicke passed through New York recently, Fallon pulled aside his "Late Night" house band The Roots and those now-familiar instruments for a duet of "Blurred Lines."

The video, just the latest in a series in which Fallon remakes popular tunes with children's play instruments, everyone tries to keep a straight face. By the way, they're really singing, not lip-synching!?

Chromecast update breaks root-friendly exploit

Chromecast exploit in action

We hope you weren't planning to tinker with your Chromecast this weekend. GTVHacker has confirmed that a recent firmware update to Google's streaming media stick plugs the bootloader exploit that many are using to get root access. Some XDA-Developers members have tried maintaining root by flashing recovery images and disabling signing keys, but those aren't reliable solutions -- we've seen a few reports of bricked Chromecasts. If you're cautious, it may be best to wait until more adventurous owners find a vulnerability in Google's newer code.

Find No. 1 summer song from your favorite year

Entertainment

Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" may be the hit song of this summer, and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" certainly topped last year's summer season. But what was the song of the summer the year you graduated high school, or got married, or moved to a new town, or met the love of your life?

IMAGE:Madonna, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Carly Rae Jepsen and Beyonce

EPA; Getty Images; AP

Madonna (1986), Sir Mix-A-Lot (1992), Carly Rae Jepse (2012) and Beyonce (2003) have all had top summer songs.

If you don't remember, you can find out via a neat feature from Billboard.com which lists the top 10 summer songs from the years 1985-2012. (We wish it went back further, so we could check songs from our birth years and childhood.)

Did you graduate high school in 1985? Perhaps you and your classmates were singing "Shout" by Tears for Fears at graduation parties.

Meet the love of your life in 1990? Maybe she was your "Vision of Love," as sung by Mariah Carey.

Did you get married in 1993? Like UB40, you just "Can't Help Falling in Love."

Yes, not all of the songs are winners. (1996's "Macarena" was played at many weddings, but have you heard it lately?) But summer songs, like summer romances, are of the moment, not always built to last. Peruse the list and don't be surprised if the gentle scent of Coppertone and chloriney tang of the pool in July come wafting in your window as you reminisce.

FYI to all you fans planning to bring oversized bags to the?Aug. 9 preseason opener at the Metrodome:

DON'T DO IT! Here's why ...

Starting with their Aug. 9 preseason home opener, the Vikings will be adhering to the NFL?s new policy that limits the size and types of bags that fans will be allowed to bring into the stadium on game days. Here?s what will be allowed:

. Clear bags that do not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches. The Vikings will send season-ticket holders a bag of this size with a team logo on it.

. One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag. Zip-lock bags will be available at the stadium.

. Small clutch bags, about the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap, can be brought in along with one of the above clear-bag options.

Exceptions will be made for medically-necessary items. For more information, go to NFL.com/allclear.

Apple says iOS 7 will patch exploit that lets rogue chargers install malware

iOS 7 press shot

Recently, Georgia Tech researchers discovered an unusual way to attack iOS: a third-party charger with a hidden computer can install malware when an iOS device is plugged in and unlocked. That won't be an issue for much longer, however, as Apple has confirmed that iOS 7 beta 4 and future releases contain a fix. While the company hasn't said what that solution is, Georgia Tech's Billy Lau says that the new OS can tell when it's plugged into a computer instead of a charger -- there shouldn't be any rude surprises. The dependence on an iOS 7-based fix could leave many users vulnerable until the fall, although the hardware-specific nature of the exploit means it's unlikely to be a major concern.

Robin Thicke: 'Blurred Lines' like 'great art'

Performances

You can run, but you can't hide from "Blurred Lines," the song that has turned out to be the surprise hit of Summer 2013. The song spent 7 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, while also generating a certain amount of controversy for its lyrics.

Thicke took the plaza's stage (holding a shiny gold microphone) to sing the tune, along with "Take It Easy On Me" and to chat with TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday. Oh, and they also addressed the debate over the song's lyrics.

"When we made the song we had nothing but the most respect for women," said the 36-year-old singer, who releases his sixth album, also called "Blurred Lines," on Tuesday.

"I've been with the same woman since I was a teenager," he added. "Sometimes the lyrics can get misconstrued when you're just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time. But we had no idea it would stir this much controversy.... We only had the best intentions."

Anyway, he says, controversy is good: "That's what great art does, it's supposed to stir conversation, it's supposed to make us talk about what's important."

Well, whether you think "Blurred Lines" is "great art" or not, it sure is a catchy tune. Be sure to check out the videos of Thicke's performances from TODAY and the great tweets, Vines and Instagrams from our fans and TODAY anchors.
