Attorney General warns of new identity theft scam in Texas

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott warns consumers to not give out any personal information to people claiming to offer utility assistance.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is warning consumers in San Antonio and throughout the state of a scam that claims to offer financial assistance to help cover the cost of utility bills.

Individuals have been contacting people through in-person solicitations, social media, fliers, phone calls and text message to sign people up for a fictitious Obama administration program that supposedly pays people?s utility bills. People are given a so-called ?Federal Reserve bank routing number? to pay their utility bills.

However, to activate this program, utility customers are told they must provide Social Security numbers and bank routing numbers. People who fall for this scam end up giving away sensitive personal information.

There have been reports of this scam sweeping the country, according to the Attorney General?s Office.

Abbott says that consumers should never give their Social Security number, credit card number or bank account information to anyone who asks for it during an unsolicited phone call or in-home visit. If someone calls claiming to represent CPS Energy?

Film Threat - Byod: Bring Your Own Doc ? Episode 32: La Film ...

We wrap up our LA Film Fest series with three films that highlight unexplored stories. Maya Stark and Adi Lavy talk with us about their film about the Navajo community, Sun Kissed. The unlikely genetic condition they encountered made for a fascinating subject.

We then meet with David Fenster about his hybrid-doc film, Pincus, which opened up his own family to the lens as they confronted his father?s Parkinson?s disease.

Finally, the wildly enthusiastic R.H. Greene opens up about his homage to a good friend and Cult queen, Vampira and Me. From rolling with James Dean to hard times in New York, Vampira is shown as one of the great often-overlooked figures of modern culture.

The Internet Sales Influence Outsourcing Business & Marketing or ...

Predictable Cash Flow

Your Predictable Revenue

The Age of Outsourcing and Sales and Marketing techniques. Today, now more than ever, companies need to go outside to find partners, consultants, inter-management methods, and service providers who can help them to cover the range of their needs of sales and marketing. As new rules have been invented regarding lead generation, the net, and more complexity has come into the sales and business development and marketing model of most companies, it?s very difficult for you to keep up with all of the skill sets that are expected in order to be on the top of your company?s game and maintain best practices across all of those functional areas. So, companies are looking increasingly to bring in outsourced service providers who can provide them with fractional management or contract personnel or ongoing outsourcing and consulting to cover the needs that they?re not capable of keeping in house or can not justify to have on a full time basis.

Outsourcing covers a range of different types of functional areas, including search engine optimization, pay per click management, and product management / product marketing. Many companies go through launch phases of new products or product requirements or definition in new product planning cycles that require having those resources around. But they don?t need them on a long-lasting basis once a new product has been defined, built, launched, and handed off into the sales force. Copywriting is another area where a lot of enterprises look to outsource that capability in the marketing side for creating new brochures, collateral, web design copy, etc. Many companies would love to have a graphics design and internet marketing capability in house, but they simply can?t afford or justify doing that on a full time basis, yet this does work perfectly in an outsourced model, where you have a full service web design company that can build your online world wide web site pages, conversion mechanisms, landing pages, microsites, etc. and deploy those for your company. So, these are just some of the many examples of areas where companies need to consider outsourcing in order get all their work done.

At the management level, many companies can?t justify having a full time VP of Marketing or a Director of Business Development, but what they can justify is having an interim management solution or fractional management solution. Some providers that are trying to get to the next level would love to have that top executive on the marketing side but it?s just simply too expensive and they can?t afford it. So what do they do? Often times, they do nothing, and as a result, are not capable of moving their business forward in their bull?s-eye markets and really executing a practical marketing solution.

This is a perfect example of where fractional management or outsourcing of a management function or interim management of that function can make a lot of sense and can be done without bearing the full cost of a full time employee. Smart companies are using fractional VPs of marketing who are top marketing professionals to come in and help them plan and execute their promotion programs even if they?re not on a full time basis. This provides a wonderful solution: a company can get a part of a senior marketing manager without paying full time for it. So if you?re company is thinking about how to get its sales and marketing to the next level, you might want to consider what your outsourcing and fractional interim management tactic is and how you can put new resources to work for your company on an interim or part time basis, or on a project basis that will help you to round out the skills sets of your company and accelerate your sales.

Of course, there are some positions in your company that you simply can not afford to outsource and you need a permanent hiring or recruiting solution for those positions. A good example of that is your VP of sales. Very few companies would consider outsourcing their VP of sales duties to an outsource company. When they do, of course, there are fractional management solutions that are available from companies like ours. However,, a more common notion is that a VP of sales has got to be somebody who is really dedicated to full time, permanent or regular position inside the company. In those cases, it makes perfect sense for you to find a recruiting company to help you search for, screen, and find a top sales leader to come into your company and help you create and execute your sales strategy.

A lot of times a company is on sort of the edge of exactly where they?re not sure if it?s time for them to have an in house solution on a permanent basis or if they could go with a fractional solution. Part of the issue is how core the function is to your long term strategy as a company, and how strategic it is really for the execution of your business model. But there are many functions inside a company that can not be outsourced and must be kept in house. And in those cases, finding a partner who can help you to recruit those resources and bring them into your company is absolutely critical to accelerating your sales and generating top line growth, transforming your sales, and growing your company.

When does it make sense to contract out part of your management sales and marketing or business development management functions to an outsourced service provider? One of the examples is, if your company has a tactical marketing team of marketing communications specialist, doing advertising, internet marketing, direct mail or organizing trade shows, but you can?t afford a full time manager inside the company, you still need somebody who can provide planning, oversight, and leadership to that team. If you?re a CEO, who is an engineering, operations or finance oriented person, you?re probably not the best person to direct this team and bring best practices into the company and marketing.

That person can participate in your quarterly supervision team meetings, in your company?s planning cycle, including doing strategic marketing planning, developing your go to market strategy, segmenting and maintaining your revisioned competitive analysis, doing those kinds of projects, or at lease overseeing them at a high level, and helping your company to provide top level oversight of the execution of your marketing programs. That?s a perfect example of where having a fractional VP of marketing, on an outsourced basis from a consulting or service provider, can make a lot of sense. Another example is, when you?ve brought a new product to market and you?ve realized that the best way to bring that product to market is through third party distribution channels and you already have a channel supervision function set up for system integrators, VARs or OEMS, but what you want to do is you want to deploy an unique channel for this particular product line.

This is a perfect project to contract out to an interim VP of business development or interim director of business development ? a rainmaker who can go out and research, target, identify, screen, and select a new channel of distribution for your new product line. Or, perhaps your company has definitely got a system of integrators providing a technical solution that bundles your product into a full turn key solution for your clients, but you?ve now come up with a shrink wrapped, office shelf product that can really be sold with less value added and less integration and you have an avenue organization that?s set up to run your system integrators but you don?t have anybody who?s capable of going and finding OEMs or more traditional VARs for that product. Here, you can easily bring in an outsourced or fractional or interim VP of business development to set up that channel for you, get it going, make sure that it?s running smoothly and producing the sell through that you?re looking for, and then handed over to your normal channel management organisation.

Make Promoting Your Book a Habit | Writing and Publishing News

How do you approach the task of book promotion? Do you have a method? A plan? Do you spend every day promoting or do you promote in between other duties? Perhaps you just promote when you feel like it??I have a few minutes today, I?ll stop in at a local bookstore and see if they?ll carry my book,? or ?I?ll look around for a speaking opportunity,? or ?I?ll send a press release, post to my blog, etc.?

How?s that working for you?

I?d like to suggest that you take book promotion more seriously and participate more fully on a more regular basis. The following suggestions are NOT embraced by the 76 percent of authors who fail. If you don?t want to be among this statistic, pay attention:

1: Make a plan. List the book promotion activities you definitely can do and want to do. Below that, list those that you should be doing, could be doing, don?t particularly want to do. And then list those things you probably won?t ever get around to doing. But don?t label them as such. You may not want to do any public speaking. Write it down, anyway. You may get used to the idea and eventually give it a try. I highly recommend that you do, by the way. Remember, personality sells books.

2: Give these activities legs. In other words, prepare a loose schedule?promise to spend Monday mornings seeking out bookselling opportunities, take a few hours each week to research book reviewers, blog daily with regard to the topic or genre of your book, contact ten individuals or company/organization leaders every week with a soft pitch for your book, keep your finger on the pulse of your community?be open to the opportunities, for example.

3: Change something about your website every few weeks?offer something related to your book for free, create a challenge for web visitors, post a book trailer, etc.

4: Start some new method of communicating with your audience?through webinars or podcasts, a newsletter, an interactive blog, face-to-face workshops, and so forth.

5: Carry your book with you wherever you go and hand out promotional material.

6: Create spin-offs. That is, booklets, ebooklets, games or an item related to your book.

7: Devise a contest to bring attention to your book.

8: Seek out conferences in your topic of genre where you can give workshops.

9: Sign up for book festivals where you can promote your book.

10: Post comments at other blog sites, ask to be a guest blogger, launch a virtual blog tour.

Are you doing these things? When is the last time you did anything toward promoting your book? If you want to sell more copies this summer and fall, take a close look at these ten suggestions. Pick a few or several of them to pursue. Add to this list?there?s so much more you can be doing. Study books like mine: Promote Your Book, Over 250 Proven, Low-Cost Tips and Techniques for the Enterprising Author, and you will sell more books.

I guess you can check "environmentally friendly electronics" off Apple's complete line of products. Why? Well, it seems as though Apple actually requested its products be removed from the list because the company's design direction was "no longer consistent" with EPEAT requirements. Whatever the hell that means. confused

One of Apple?s newest products, the MacBook Pro with a high-resolution "Retina" display, was nearly impossible to fully disassemble, said Kyle Wiens, co-founder of iFixit.com, a website that provides directions for users to repair their own machines. The battery was glued to the case, and the glass display was glued to its back. The product, released just a month ago, had not been submitted for EPEAT certification, according to the organization.

India gold demand revival soon as festival wedding season nears

Last Updated : 09 July 2012 at 17:35 IST Source :Commodity Online

MUMBAI (Commodity Online): India gold demand may witness revival during the upcoming festival and wedding season beginning August aided by a revival in market sentiments, according to Angel Commodities.

In recent times, gold demand fell sharply as ?Indian Rupee plummetted against the US Dollar due to a fall in capital inflows, weak domestic equities and a stronger dollar index.

?Consumption in the Indian markets for gold has witnessed slowdown in the first-half of 2012, but with improving confidence in the global markets we expect the trend in demand to reverse,? Angel Commodities said.

The Bombay Bullion Association?s President Mr. Prithviraj Kothari said that imports during the second-half of the current calendar year could be around 300 tonnes, an increase that what was recorded in the first-half of this year at 250 tonnes.

In the current scneario, safehaven demand will not be a driver of gold and prices will move higher on basis of risk sentiments which are likely to be upbeat considering the central bank moves at monetary easing.

?From the short term perspective gold prices might witness correction initially owing to the ongoing?macroeconomic concerns in major economies of the world and no concrete step towards solution of the?Euro debt crisis. However, rise in the risk appetite is likely to be witnessed if central governments adopt?stimulus measures to boost the economy. This could provide support to the prices on the upside,? Angel Commodities said.

Technical Levels (1 month): Buy MCX Gold August at Rs 29000-28950, SL-28200, Target -30300?Spot Gold: Trend- Up, Support $1547/$1498 Resistance $1643/$1689

Long-term hormone treatment increases synapses in rat prefrontal cortex

Monday, July 9, 2012

A new study of aged female rats found that long-term treatment with estrogen and a synthetic progesterone known as MPA increased levels of a protein marker of synapses in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region known to suffer significant losses in aging.

The new findings appear to contradict the results of the Women's Health Initiative, a long-term study begun in 1991 to analyze the effects of hormone therapy on a large sample of healthy postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79. Among other negative findings, the WHI found that long-term exposure to estrogen alone or to estrogen and MPA resulted in an increased risk of stroke and dementia. More recent research, however, suggests that starting hormone replacement therapy at the onset of menopause, rather than years or decades afterward, yields different results.

The new study, from researchers at the University of Illinois, is the first to look at the effects of long-term treatment with estrogen and MPA on the number of synapses in the prefrontal cortex of aged animals. The researchers describe their findings in a paper in the journal Menopause.

The prefrontal cortex, just behind the forehead in humans, governs what researchers call "executive function" ? planning, strategic thinking, working memory (the ability to hold information in mind just long enough to use it), self-control and other functions that tend to decline with age.

"The prefrontal cortex is the area of the human brain that loses the most volume with age," said U. of I. psychology professor and Beckman Institute affiliate Janice Juraska, who led the study with doctoral student Nioka Chisholm. "So understanding how anything affects the prefrontal cortex is important."

Most studies of the effects of hormone treatments on the brain have focused on the hippocampus, a structure important to spatial navigation and memory consolidation. The studies tend to use young animals exposed to hormones for very brief periods of time (one or two days to a few weeks at the most). They have yielded mixed results, with most research in young female animals indicating an increase in hippocampal synapses and hippocampal function after exposure to estrogen and MPA.

"For some reason, a lot of researchers still look at the effects of hormones in young animals," Chisholm said. "And there's a lot of evidence now saying that the aged brain is different; the effect of these hormones is not going to be the same."

The new study followed middle-aged rats exposed to estrogen alone, to no additional hormones, or to estrogen in combination with MPA for seven months, a time period that more closely corresponds to the experience of women who start hormone therapy at the onset of menopause and continue into old age. The researchers removed the rats' ovaries just prior to the hormone treatment (or lack of treatment) to mimic the changes that occur in humans during menopause.

"Our most important finding is that estrogen in combination with MPA can result in a greater number of synapses in the prefrontal cortex than (that seen) in animals that are not receiving hormone replacement," Chisholm said. "Estrogen alone marginally increased the synapses, but it took the combination with MPA to actually see the significant effect."

"Our data indicate that re-examining the effects of estrogen and MPA, when first given to women around the time of menopause, is merited," Juraska said.

(AP) ? The American job machine has jammed. Again.

The economy added only 80,000 jobs in June, the government said Friday, erasing any doubt that the United States is in a summer slump for the third year in a row.

"Let's just agree: This number stinks," said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at the investment firm BTIG.

It was the third consecutive month of weak job growth. From April through June, the economy produced an average of just 75,000 jobs a month, the weakest three months since August through October 2010.

The unemployment rate stayed at 8.2 percent ? a recession-level figure, even though the Great Recession has technically been over for three years.

The numbers could hurt President Barack Obama's odds for re-election. Mitt Romney, the presumed Republican nominee, said they showed that Obama, in three and a half years on the job, had not "gotten America working again."

"And the president is going to have to stand up and take responsibility for it," Romney said in Wolfeboro, N.H. "This kick in the gut has got to end."

Obama, on a two-day bus tour through the contested states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, focused on private companies, which added 84,000 jobs in June, and took a longer view of the economic recovery.

"Businesses have created 4.4 million new jobs over the past 28 months, including 500,000 new manufacturing jobs," the president said. "That's a step in the right direction."

The Labor Department's report on job creation and unemployment is the most closely watched monthly indicator of the U.S. economy. There are four reports remaining before Election Day, including one on Friday, Nov. 2, four days before Americans vote.

No president since World War II has faced re-election with unemployment over 8 percent. It was 7.8 percent when Gerald Ford lost to Jimmy Carter in 1976. Ronald Reagan faced 7.2 percent unemployment in 1984 and trounced Walter Mondale.

Patrick Sims, director of research at the consulting firm Hamilton Place Strategies, said that "time has run out" for unemployment to fall below 8 percent by Election Day.

That would require an average of about 220,000 jobs a month from July through October ? more like the economy's performance from January through March, when it averaged 226,000 per month.

Few economic analysts expect anything close to that.

"The labor market is treading water," said Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. She called it an "ongoing, severe crisis for the American work force."

The Labor Department report put investors in a sour mood.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 124 points. Industrial and materials companies, which depend on economic growth, were among the stocks that fell the most. The price of oil fell $2.77 per barrel to $84.45.

Money flowed instead into U.S. Treasurys, which investors perceive as safer than stocks when the economy is weakening. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell to 1.54 percent, from 1.59 percent on Thursday.

Investors were already worried about a debt crisis that has gripped Europe for almost three years and recent signals that the powerhouse economy of China is slowing.

Earlier this week, the European Central Bank and the central bank of China cut interest rates in hopes of encouraging people and businesses to borrow and spend money.

For American investors, however, the jobs report fell into an uncomfortable middle ground.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke promised last month that the Federal Reserve would take additional steps to help the economy "if we're not seeing a sustained improvement in the labor market."

But some financial analysts said that the Labor Department report, while disappointing, was not weak enough to lock in further action by the Fed at its next meeting July 31 and Aug. 1.

The slowdown in job growth has been stark. From December through February, the economy produced an average of 252,000 jobs a month, twice what is needed to keep up with population growth.

But the jobs generator started sputtering in March, when job growth slowed to 143,000.

At first, economists blamed the weather for warping the numbers. An unusually warm winter allowed construction companies and other employers to hire earlier in the year than usual, effectively stealing jobs from the spring, they said.

But weird weather could only explain so much, and the bad news kept coming: The economy added just 68,000 jobs in April and 77,000 in May. Those figures reflect revisions from earlier estimates of 77,000 for April and 69,000 for May.

June's dud of a number made it clear that the economy has fallen into the same pattern it followed in 2010 and 2011: It gets off to a relatively fast start, then fades at midyear.

Offering some hope, the slowdowns the two previous years lasted just four months each.

From June through September 2010, the economy lost an average of 75,000 jobs per month. From May through August 2011, the economy added an average of 80,000 per month. Both years, hiring picked up significantly when the weak stretches ended.

To be sure, the United States is still suffering the hangover of a financial crisis and the worst recession since the 1930s. The economy lost 8.8 million jobs during and after the recession. It has regained 3.8 million.

The economy isn't growing fast enough to create jobs at a healthy clip. That is primarily because three traditional pistons of the economic engine aren't firing the way they normally do:

? Consumer spending since the recession has been weaker than in any other post-World War II recovery, partly because wage increases have been small. In such a weak job market, employers don't need to give big raises. And households are trying to pay off the debt they ran up in the mid-2000s.

? Housing has been a dead weight on the economy for six years. Home-building usually powers economic recoveries, but construction spending is barely half what economists consider healthy.

? Government, which usually picks up the slack in the job market when the economy is weak, isn't helping this time. Counting federal, state and local jobs, governments have cut 637,000 jobs since 2008. They have cut 49,000 the last three months.

In the first three months of this year, it appeared state and local government job losses were coming to an end.

"That turned out to be a temporary halt," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial. "Apparently, there's no end in sight."

The figure of 80,000 jobs came from a Labor Department survey of businesses and government agencies. Another survey, of American households, looks better. It shows the number of employed Americans rose by 381,000 the past three months ? 127,000 a month.

The household survey can catch the self-employed and those working for very small businesses, who can be missed by the bigger business survey. But over time the two surveys usually tell the same story.

The unemployment rate last month was unchanged from May. But a broader measure of weakness in the labor market, the so-called underemployment rate, deteriorated for the second straight month.

In June, 14.9 percent of Americans either were unemployed, had been forced to settle for part-time employment, or had given up looking for work and were not counted as unemployed. The rate was 14.8 percent in May and 14.5 percent in April.

The Labor Department report left economists grasping for good news. Average hourly pay rose 6 cents in June, the biggest monthly gain in nearly a year. The average workweek grew slightly, the first gain in four months.

The extra hours and higher wages put more money in consumers' pockets. And companies hired 25,000 temporary workers, usually a sign that they will hire full-time workers soon.

"That we latch on to these modest positives speaks to the bias of low expectations," Greenhaus said.

Meantime, 12.7 million Americans remain officially unemployed.

When Deborah Masse, 49, lost a job in 2007, she had a job offer within six weeks. This time has been different. Since being laid off in October 2011, she has sent thousands of resumes and had several phone interviews but received no offers.

Masse, who lives in Stanton, Mich., with her husband and mother, has tried to make use of her free time. She has exercised more, learned some French and Spanish, and brushed up on her technology skills.

"If nothing else," she said, "I will end up on Social Security, more fit, more intelligent and worldly ? and broke."

Higgs boson: So who is getting the Nobel?

The discovery of a particle thought to be the elusive Higgs boson has prompted a new investigation: Whose names will be engraved on the Nobel Prize in Physics medal?

There's the science, and then there's the glitter. As researchers celebrate the best-yet evidence of the existence of the Higgs boson, some are already thinking about who's going to get the Nobel Prize in physics for the seminal discovery.

Stephen Hawking told the BBC that he thinks Peter Higgs, who first theorized about the particle, should get the prize. But the award can go to as many as three people and even to groups, though the science Nobel committees haven't yet seen a need to recognize groups, says Sven Lidin, chairman of the Nobel committee in chemistry. So who else may share the podium with Higgs?

The talk around the physics prize for the Higgs boson is especially hot because so many people were involved in the research teams that worked at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Modern physics is?bigger than ever.?

The great majority of research performed since the 1940s has been conducted by teams of people working in laboratory groups, said Tom Broman, a historian of science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

"The problem of making awards to individuals has been exacerbated, but by no means created, by the scaling up of research projects," Broman said in an email.

Nowhere is scientific teamwork more evident than in physics. Many physics experiments today use instruments that cost millions or billions to build, such as the Hubble Space Telescope or the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. These complex instruments require many scientists to run them, to analyze data from them, and to share them, as no small group could afford to build a space telescope just for itself. So when something exciting comes out of those instruments, there are many people who contributed to the discovery.?

CERN announced "strong indications for the presence of a new particle, which could be the Higgs boson" on Wednesday (July 4). The existence of the Higgs boson would lend crucial support for the?Standard Model, a major physics theory about how matter in the universe works.

A modern prize is a collaborative one?

"A situation like this certainly puts those seeking to recognize individuals in quite a quandary," said Adam Riess, an astronomer at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore who won the Nobel Prize in physics last year.?

Riess' own win sparked some conversations about prizes in modern physics. He used the Hubble Space Telescope to measure supernovae, concluding the?universe is accelerating in its expansion, and shared his Nobel with two other scientists from two different teams. One of the teams was made up of about 20 people and the other, about 35. "So there were many more people who were involved," he said.?

Finding just three people to recognize often means looking for people who contributed just slightly more than others, Riess said. He compared Nobel-awarding to his work as a professor. At the end of the semester, he has to decide how to divide the top of the class into A and B grades. "You look for a natural break, but it doesn't always exist," he said. "This quandary isn't just in prizes. It's all facets of life." [The 9 Biggest Unsolved Mysteries in Physics]

While they might pretend otherwise sometimes, many scientists still care deeply about recognition. "Scientists are people, too," Riess said. Although each category's Nobel is worth about $1 million, Riess said, "It's not a money issue, generally. It's being able to identify yourself as being involved in work that was recognized as being important."

Romney's wife says woman being eyed for ticket

WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) ? Mitt Romney's wife has confirmed a tidbit about the vice presidential search process her husband largely has been keeping secret: He's considering choosing a woman.

"We've been looking at that, and I love that option as well," Ann Romney told CBS News in a joint interview with her husband that was broadcast Thursday. She added: "There's a lot of people that Mitt is considering right now."

The disclosure came as the Republican presidential candidate, vacationing with his family at their lakeside estate in Wolfeboro, faced mounting criticism from inside the party about the state of his campaign.

Officially, the campaign says Romney is doing what he's done for the past decade ? enjoying family time during a weeklong holiday in New Hampshire. It's also a break from the campaign trail and a chance to relax before the pre-convention push. But unofficially, the bit of down time is a chance for the contemplative Romney to consider who to tap for the No. 2 slot, how the campaign is going and whether to adjust strategy in a contest that polls show is close.

Romney declined in the interview to describe the status of the vice presidential search, saying: "That's something I'm keeping close with my team." He also didn't respond to growing calls within Republican circles for him to shake up his staff after a series of missteps. Among them: his campaign's initial refusal to side with Republicans who agree with the Supreme Court that the penalty included in President Barack Obama's health care mandate amounts to a tax. Romney eventually agreed with that assessment and, in doing so, broke with a key spokesman.

All that has conservative opinion leaders, including media titan Rupert Murdoch, calling for Romney to shake up his top staff. GOP officials in key states also are increasingly calling on Romney to talk about issues beyond his key message ? that the economy remains weak under Obama ? and to be more specific about what he would do as president.

William Kristol, editor of the conservative Weekly Standard, wrote Thursday that Romney's strategy "strikes me as a path to (narrow) defeat." The Wall Street Journal editorial page also criticized the campaign's "insular staff and strategy that are slowly squandering an historic opportunity."

"Mr. Obama is being hurt by an economic recovery that is weakening for the third time in three years. But Mr. Romney hasn't been able to take advantage, and if anything he is losing ground," the newspaper wrote, calling for "a larger economic narrative and vision than Mr. Romney has so far provided."

Ann Romney, for her part, took issue with the Obama team's strategy, telling her interviewer that Democrats will "do everything they can to destroy Mitt."

"Early on we heard what their strategy was. It was 'kill Romney,'" she said, adding a message to Obama: "Not when I'm next to him you better not."

She also sketched out her own requirements for what she'd like to see in a running mate, saying the person should be "someone that obviously can do the job but will be able to carry through with some of the other responsibilities." She said the person should be someone who will have her husband's back and who he will enjoy being around and have "the same personality type." She added: "Competent, capable and willing to serve this country. I think there's lots of good people out there that fill that bill right now."

Inside Republican circles, speculation also is high about who Romney will choose, with his search well under way and his self-imposed deadline for picking someone "before the convention" looming large. It's the biggest decision he will make between now and when he accepts the GOP presidential nomination in late August.

Talk among GOP insiders has focused on men as likely top prospects, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

But no less than a half-dozen other names also have popped up, including New Hampshire Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte ? who walked in a July Fourth parade with Romney on Wednesday ? as well as South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman.

The only time Romney has said anything substantive about the running mate search was last month when he said his advisers were "thoroughly vetting" Rubio. Romney commented after news reports surfaced citing unnamed advisers who said the Florida senator was not being considered.

It's been four years since John McCain chose then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a rock-ribbed conservative who was little-known outside of her home state, to be the first female on a Republican presidential ticket as he sought a way to both fire up the GOP's core supporters while narrowing Obama's advantage among women.

It wasn't long before questions about Palin's readiness to be president ? and criticism of an inadequate vetting process ? became a major problem for McCain. Critics used the pick to pummel him on his decision-making.

This year, Romney has used that experience as a guide. He's said preparedness to be president is his No. 1 requirement for a vice presidential candidate. Unlike four years ago, Republican base voters are energized largely by a desire to beat Obama.

But polls show that Romney still badly trails Obama among women, and putting one on the ticket ? or even just raising the possibility of a female running mate ? could help carve into that support.

Romney and his wife huddled for at least 45 minutes Tuesday with campaign manager Matt Rhoades, senior adviser Beth Myers and top strategist Stuart Stevens on the deck that overlooks the lawn behind his home.

Further fueling the running-mate talk: Portman was headlining a fundraiser in Concord, N.H., this weekend; he also wrote an opinion piece published in an Ohio newspaper Thursday to counter Obama's campaign appearances in the state Thursday and Friday. Pawlenty and Jindal both were in Ohio for the same reason, to campaign for Romney near Obama's events.

Pele says 1970 Brazil side more gifted than Spain

Spain's national soccer team players celebrate their Euro 2012 victory on a stage in downtown Madrid

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil's 1970 World Cup winners contained more gifted individuals than Spain's current all-conquering national side, the Brazilian side's greatest player Pele said on Wednesday.

Asked who would win a showdown between the two teams, Pele flashed a big smile and said: "If I was playing, we'd win, no doubt about it."

"As long as they are comparing teams with the 1970s, it is because the 1970s team is better," he added. "(The) 1970 (team) is the standard by which others are rated."

Spain won the European Championship for the second time in a row on Sunday and, as World Cup Winners in 2010, became the first team in the post-war era to win three successive major international tournaments.

Spain's dominance and possession-based style of play have won them comparisons with the Brazil side of 1970, widely regarded as the greatest ever.

That team, led by Pele and featuring Rivellino, Gerson, Tost?o and Jairzinho, won the World Cup in Mexico, hammering Italy 4-1 in the final.

Pele retired from international football in 1971 and did not go to the World Cup in West Germany in 1974, where a disappointing Brazil side finished fourth.

Pele, 71, said the difference between Brazil then and Spain today was the number of outstanding players on each team. He said Brazil were far superior on a player-by-player basis.

"These comparisons will always be there but you can't compare them individually," he said. "Individually the 1970 team had a lot more better players than Spain, who have two or three excellent players."

Nevertheless, the former Santos and New York Cosmos player lauded the Spaniards and said watching them was a rare pleasure.

"Without a doubt, this Spain side play the football I've most liked to watch over the last couple of generations," he said.
