The winners of the 2012 Oscars have already been announced. But the official winners' list only tells part of the story of Sunday night's show. There were nipples that might have slipped, legs that poked bizarrely out and an ash-filled urn malfunction on the red carpet. There were front-runners who fell short and dark horses who pulled out unexpected victories. Who were the true winners and losers at the Oscars this year? Let's take a look...
Winner: Billy Crystal
Hauled out from some cryogenic awards-show freezer where time does not pass and wrinkles are not allowed to crease one's face, Crystal emerged onto the Oscar stage for the ninth time ... and didn't make us fall asleep. Loser: Meryl Streep
Though she won Best Actress — which, according to our estimates, was the 37th Oscar win of her career — even Streep herself appeared sheepish to have swiped the category away from front-runner Viola Davis.
Winner: Sacha Baron Cohen
Handed the gift of a temporary ban from the Academy because he planned to walk the red carpet as his character from "The Dictator," Baron Cohen played the PR war game perfectly, releasing an amusing YouTube video before the show and then, after the Academy relented, spilling the faux-ashes of Kim Jong Il on Ryan Seacrest during a red-carpet interview.

The academy not only proved it had no sense of humor when it banned Baron Cohen, but showed it had no spine when it reinstated him and ended up posting his image on the front page of its Oscar website.

While it was great to see Douglas out on stage and looking so healthy after his battle with cancer, everyone was disappointed that his dad wasn't the one standing in front of the cameras. Then 94-year-old Kirk Douglas' show-stealing intro at last year's Oscars was bizarre and uncomfortable and kinda amazing.

Do bees, swarms of bees, make you nervous? Maybe not. Maybe they remind you of honey, flowers and warm summer days. You stay out of their way and they stay out of yours. What if, however, the bees weren't bees at all but hundreds (or thousands) of autonomous microbots, facsimiles of the real thing, buzzing around in the real world?
That's not Hollywood fantasy any more. It appears to be within reach. Researchers in the Microrobotics Lab at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences say that they expect their Robobees project will demonstrate flying, autonomous micro-air-vehicles modeled on insects within the next 2 1/2 years.
?It won't be easy, according to Rob Wood, the project's principal investigator.
"The challenges that you get when you scale these things down mean that you have to reinvent everything, everything has to come from scratch, every one of the technologies," Wood said in an interview last week. "There is nothing off the shelf."
His team has recently taken a significant step forward with the demonstration of a manufacturing process that they believe will pave the way to industrial-scale production of microbots, spitting out thousands of them with ease.
The prototype creature built with this process has been dubbed the "Mobee," short for Monolithic Bee. With its carbon-fiber airframe and titanium wings, it doesn't really look like a bee. It's more like an intricate box frame with insect-like wings. The creatures are so lightweight that Harvard says the mass of 63 Mobees is equal to the mass of one United States quarter.
Roughly speaking, the Mobee starts as more than 18 plain sheets of material. Each sheet of carbon fiber, titanium, plastic, etc. is cut to a certain pattern by a laser. The sheets are then sandwiched together into a cohesive whole. The final step is where the magic happens.
Jacks beneath the flat sandwich push upward, allowing hinges in the design to transform the package into a three-dimensional microbot. Largely speaking, it's finished at that point. Harvard describes the process as something akin to what happens in the pages of a pop-up book or in the creation of complex origami figures.
Graduate students Pratheev Sreetharan and Peter Whitney helped develop the manufacturing process. Sreetharan, who also designed the Mobee prototype, says the hard part was hand drawing the CAD files for each of the 18 layers the laser-milling device had to shape.
"For a device like Mobee, I would say I designed it in 2 1/2 weeks. That's actual design work," Sreetharan said. "Two-and-a-half months after that was literally drawing lines [for the CAD files]."
Before the development of this pop-up manufacturing concept, the Robobees team had built each individual creature painstakingly by hand. Only about 15 percent of the bees built this way worked properly. With the new technique, where robots are essentially building robots, based on a human design, the yield is in the range of 100 percent; perfection.
The beauty of the technique, besides precision and efficiency, is that it can integrate future elements of the project directly into the designs. So, when the sensor, control and power elements of the Robobee project are ready, they can be added as integral component layers of the bee structure, rather than as bolt-on additions to the design.
Before the fully functioning Robobee becomes a reality, however, Harvard hopes to take this manufacturing process into other arenas. They believe, among other things, that it could used today in the manufacture of articulated, electro-mechanical surgical instruments. The team is working with the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering to apply what they've learned with Mobee to the manufacture of instruments for laparoscopy and endoscopy.
Graduate student Whitney says their technique is a fit for these applications because if falls in a zone between the very small processes applied to computer chips and the larger processes found in traditional machine manufacturing.
"When you want to make a fully integrated device that's on the scale of 1 or 2 cm, it's not economical to scale up the computer-chip, integrated-circuit manufacturing technology; it's just too expensive," Whitney said. "On the other hand, trying to scale down traditional manufacturing, you're sort of in a Swiss-watch situation where you can make tiny components, but then you have to assemble them all together, and that's a tedious process; so we sort of live in between those two worlds."
The real question hanging in the air, so to say, is how the bees themselves might be used once they've been endowed with the power, sensor and control mechanisms needed to fly and operate on their own.
The obvious answer is surveillance of all types, whether it's for the military in combat or scientists tracking changes in the environment or spooks keeping tabs on their targets. Oh, and they might also be able to pollinate crops of vegetables and flowers, too.
We have a few years, at least, to figure out how how swarms of robotic insects might fit into our lives. The Robobees team is working along three tracks: body, brain and colony. Each one presents its own challenges. Integrating the three strands, which are being worked on in parallel, is a whole other set of hurdles.
Mobee is just one hurdle cleared. We'll have to wait and see two years from now if the swarm is really on the horizon, and a little longer to decide if we need to run from it.

I?d like to talk (well OK, rant) for a minute about copyright and the principle of public domain.

However, the U.S. Founding Fathers viewed ownership of intellectual property as a kind of monopoly, and felt that it should be limited for the good of the public.
The basic idea is that once the creator of a copyrighted work has died, and his or her heirs (who did not actually create the work) have had a sufficient time to profit off of their relative?s efforts, the work passes into the public domain and belongs to all of us ? to copy, rework, disseminate and create variations of to our hearts content, and much to the enrichment of the culture.
Some public domain characters, for example, would include Robin Hood, King Arthur, The Three Musketeers, Snow White, Jack and the Beanstalk, Alice in Wonderland, and so on. Think of all of the inventive variations and stories we have from just those few examples.
Most artwork from history is in the public domain (though photographs of the artwork can be copyrighted by the photographers who took them or institutions to whom copyright for photographs has been assigned).
The copyright/public domain balance is a pretty good arrangement ? the creator is protected for their lifetime, the relatives get to ride their coattails for a while, and then we all benefit from a richer public culture when ownership eventually passes to us.
Unfortunately, copyright laws that were originally meant to protect creators can be twisted into tools for advancing corporate power and greed, and the legislators who create and revise our laws seem easily manipulated by those with money and influence.
The large international media conglomerates (the same ones who have been trying to push the U.S. congress into ceding control of the internet to them with travesties of legislation like PIPA and SOPA), are also doing their best to defeat the original intention of the copyright laws, and keep pressuring legislators into extending the ?sufficient time? that copyright extends past the creator?s death, to protect and advance their corporate profits.
Originally ?life of the author plus 50 years?, the provision was extended to ?life of the author plus 70? years by the 1998 Copyright Extension Act, not coincidentally just before the copyright for Disney?s Mickey Mouse was due to move into the public domain. Many referred to it as the ?Mickey Mouse Protection Act?.
Those who are cynical about this process, myself included, assume that the time that copyright extends past the creator?s death will be extended again, not coincidentally before the profit making power of Mickey Mouse can be threatened with passing into public domain under the 70 year limit, with pressure applied to legislators by the same monied interests that extended it the first time (and it?s not just Disney that wants this, it?s all the big media conglomerates).
This would effectively mean that nothing that is not deliberately put into the public domain by its creator will ever again pass into ownership of the public, and that the principle of public domain as envisioned by the framers of the U.S. system of government has effectively been defeated.
There have even been a number of attempts by media corporations to claim ownership of public domain material, effectively stealing from us.
The history of the publishing, recording and other media industries is littered with cases of big companies stealing copyrights or copyrighted material from the original creators, or forcing them to give up their rights in order to be paid.
It?s another shameful example of wealth and power trumping the public good, and something that should always keep us wary of the intentions of these corporations (particularly when they?re promoting legislation to ?protect creators? ? cough cough).
That said, we still have an extensive backlog of material already in the public domain that we can share and enjoy; which, having had my little rant, brings me to the actual subject of the post, The Public Domain Review.
The internet (at least for the time being) is a cornucopia of public domain material; sites like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, The Internet Archive, Project Gutenberg and hundreds of others offer a bounty of public domain material.
The Public Domain Review seeks to be a kind of curated guide to some of this material; its contributors offer articles on interesting finds and good sources of material. There is a page on the site about The Public Domain Review, that also talks about the principle of public domain.
There are sections for collections of topics, one of which is images. Though not yet extensive, as the site as just one year old, the collection is promising and will likely continue to grow. The selections are already nicely eclectic, as the examples above demonstrate.

After more than a decade of false starts, Gibbs Technologies launched a high-speed amphibian that it says will change the way rescue crews respond in disaster situations.
With the dramatic backdrop of the Pentagon on one side and the Washington Monument just across the Potomac River, Gibbs recently gave a demonstration of Phibian, a 30-foot amphitruck, which will be road legal and capable of more than 80 mph on the highway and 30 mph in water. Like Gibbs? other amphibians, the Phibian can transition between land and water in as little as 5 seconds.
?Natural disasters in recent memory, such as the earthquake and tsunamis in Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and elsewhere in Asia;? as well as the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, illustrate the need for amphibians as capable, versatile and efficient as Phibian,? Gibbs Chairman Neil Jenkins said.
Gibbs is now taking orders for the Phibian, although no price was announced. It plans to begin delivering vehicles in 9 to 15 months.
In addition to the Phibian, Gibbs also announced that it would take orders for another vehicle, the Humdinga II, a 20-foot amphibian that is capable of reaching the most extreme and remote territory. Gibbs did not have the Humdinga on hand for the demonstration.

When entering the water, the operator pushes a button preparing the amphibian for water entry. Once the vehicle determines that it has enough water depth to float, it raises the wheels and its ready to go on plane.
Gibbs gave demonstration rides on the Phibian to the media and dignitaries including the New Zealand ambassador to the U.S. and attorneys who are helping it obtain regulatory approval for its amphibians. Jenkins said that the U.S. Coast Guard and Environmental Protection Agency have approved the Phibian and the company expects approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration within 6 months.
The Phibian?s introduction was timed to precede the annual conference of the American Society of Naval Engineers, which was also last week. Gibbs officials were scheduled for meetings about its vehicles in connection with the conference.??

The announcement of the Phibian came as a bit of a surprise because the company is also working on the planned launch of the Quadski amphibian, which is a single-seat cross between an all-terrain vehicle and a personal watercraft. The Quadski is capable of 45 mph on land and water. Gibbs has said that the often-delayed Quadski would go into limited production this summer.
Gibbs said that the Quadski would be the first model produced by a new division it is calling Sport Amphibians.

While the Phibian is targeted at first responders such as rescue crews and fire departments, Jenkins said it will be available for sale to the general public. The prototype shown in Arlington had what Gibbs calls a quarter cab, with seating for three people, but it can be ordered with no cab, half cab or full cab. The prototype?s deck has attachment points for a versatile range of uses.???
