All The Arts Teaches Math Through Music | Fullerton News

All the Arts for All the Kids Foundation sponsors free lessons in art, music, dance, theatre, and film making for each K-6 grader in the Fullerton Public School District.? As part of this program, each student gets lessons in music taught by professional expert artist educators who focus on teaching music while tying it to California?s statewide curriculum.

Greg Adamson, one of the All the Arts music educators, recently taught an in-service session focusing on the connection between music and math.? During his lessons he breaks down musical notes and rhythms of? into understandable sections, using the well-known song ?Simple Gifts.? By teaching how each section had four notes, but some could be divided into quarter notes, eighth notes, or sixteenth notes ? they all still remained part of the original four-note beat.

Ultimately, Adamson was teaching math and fractions.

These lessons are an essential part of the All the Arts focus on using creativity to help students grow both as individual artists, but also as successful students in math, science, and Language Arts.

The music program also has a music bus ? a mobile digital studio where students can experiment with the science of sound using non-traditional sound sources.? In it, students are encouraged to create their own songs with hands-on experience and with help from an All the Arts educator.

All the Arts has a goal to provide each 4^th ? 6^th grade student with a a passion for music a free instrument to use.? The program has been very successful during the last few years, so much so that the library of instruments needs to grow again.
