Eva Longoria showed up to a very worthy event, one that should earn her respect. With that said, her choice of a gown is just plain embarrassing. It was an epic fail! This column obviously has no filter to it. We’ve made fun of the elderly, the young and clueless, the intoxicated, and of course, the ridiculously wealthy. Well this time around it’s no different. We have set our sites on the former star of Desperate Housewives, who showed up to an event looking like something that was plucked off of the top of a wedding cake. Usually she is understated, but not really conservative. Back when her show was at the top of the ratings, she would go to events dressed to the nines. This time, she looks just simple and plain. Notre Dame Football: Power Ranking Toughest Opponents Remaining on Schedule
Notre Dame had a much-needed day off after two physical games against Michigan and Michigan State. Now, the Irish must look towards the remainder of the season.
After a pedestrian 8-5 season in 2011 and starting the year unranked in the preseason poll, few expected this type of start from the Golden Domers. However, the squad is now 4-0 and on the way to a BCS bowl and possibly more.
Still, it is important not to get ahead of ourselves. The Irish still have eight games remaining on one of the most difficult schedules in the country.
While every game will be a challenge, the last few contests will take some extra preparation as the team attempts to continue its great play.

8. Home vs. Wake Forest, Nov. 17
Wake Forest was expected to give Florida State a bit of a challenge early in the year. However, the game ended in a 52-0 defeat. The Demon Deacons could not even finish off Duke at home in their most recent game.
This team simply does not have the talent to stay with the Irish for four quarters.

7. Home vs. Pittsburgh, Nov. 3
Paul Chryst leads a very balanced team and the Panthers have the ability to play with some of the best schools in the country. They proved that with a win over Virginia Tech a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately, this is the same squad that lost at home to Youngstown State 31-17 to open the year. Until Pitt gets its consistency down, it will not be a challenge to Notre Dame.

6. Home vs. Miami, Oct. 6
The Hurricanes have gotten out to a good start to the season. They are 4-1 and have scored at least 38 points in all four wins.
Unfortunately, the team was exposed in the loss to Kansas State, Miami's only real challenge of the season.?
Notre Dame has one of the best defenses in the country and should be able to slow down Stephen Morris and company.

5. At Boston College, Nov. 10?
The fact that this is a road game makes this game a little tougher for the Irish. This battle is one of only four true road games for the team all year.
Boston College always plays Notre Dame tough, winning six straight games in the rivalry between 2001 and 2008. The team also has a strong passing attack that will be tough to defend.
The players better not sleepwalk through the "Holy War," or it will go down as a loss in the record book.

Stanford showed how good it can be at home when it upset USC 21-14. However, it also showed how bad it can be on the road when it lost 17-13 to Washington in the very next game.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) ? Mark Richt looked past the mind-boggling offensive statistics to find the most important fact for his Georgia team.
When the game was on the line, Georgia made the plays. Even on defense.
Todd Gurley ran for three touchdowns and Keith Marshall added two as No. 5 Georgia recovered after blowing a 17-point lead to beat Tennessee 51-44 on Saturday in the highest-scoring game ever between the SEC rivals.
Georgia (5-0, 3-0 SEC), which had never scored more points against the Volunteers in 41 previous meetings, needed three takeaways in the final six minutes stay unbeaten. Twice Sanders Commings intercepted Tyler Bray's passes and in between the Tennessee quarterback was stripped from behind and the fumble was recovered by Georgia's John Jenkins.
"You can get into statistics, but the bottom line is a lot of games are going to come down to the end where somebody has to make a play," Richt said.
"It's nice to have a gut-check and come out on top."
The Bulldogs' defensive plays in the closing minutes followed a game packed with offense.
The previous high for points in the series was 84 in Tennessee's 51-33 win in 2006. On Saturday, the teams combined for 60 points in just the first half.
Georgia had 282 yards rushing as its two freshmen each topped 100 yards. With former Georgia standout Herschel Walker watching, Gurley had 24 carries for 130 yards. Marshall had 164 yards on only 10 carries.
Asked if he anticipated the high-scoring pace, Gurley said "Probably not."
"We know what we're capable of," said Gurley, who has rushed for more than 100 yards in four of his first five games. "We did our thing. We executed."
Aaron Murray threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to Michael Bennett for the Bulldogs.
Georgia led 27-10 early in the second quarter before Tennessee took the lead with 20 unanswered points.
Tennessee (3-2, 0-2 SEC) took its third straight loss in the series under coach Derek Dooley, the son of Georgia's former longtime coach Vince Dooley.
"We are better in a lot of areas, but we have to shore up the run defense," Derek Dooley said. "Georgia is a great running team but we are a lot better than what we showed out there today. It was frustrating."
Georgia plays at No. 6 South Carolina next week in a key SEC East game.
"We've been able to overcome the adversity we've had to this point," Richt said. "The rest of the season hasn't been a whole lot of drama, but I'm sure there will be drama next week."
Bray moved the Vols inside the Georgia 35 late in the game before he fumbled when hit by linebacker Jordan Jenkins. John Jenkins recovered with 1:22 remaining.
Bray had one more long-shot chance when the Vols took possession with 15 seconds remaining. Commings' interception on first down ended the game.
"Through all the disappointment, I think the team grew a lot," said Tennessee tight end Mychal Rivera, who had three catches for 82 yards.
Bray completed 24-of-45 passes for 281 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Rajion Neal had 104 yards rushing with a touchdown and also caught a touchdown pass.
Murray completed 19 of 25 for 278 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Murray also lost a fumble.
Entering the day, Tennessee had its most total yards through four games in school history, and Bray's 12 touchdown passes tied for the NCAA lead.
The Vols had 478 yards against Georgia.
Georgia, meanwhile, led the SEC with its average of 47.5 points after topping 40 points in its first four games for the first time in school history.
Following a 30-30 first half, Murray threw third-quarter touchdown passes of 8 and 32 yards to Bennett.
The game was a special teams mess for both sides.
There were three missed extra points, including two by Georgia. The Bulldogs blocked a punt and Tennessee's Derrick Brodus missed a 28-yard field goal.
The Vols' only touchdown in the first quarter came on Byron Moore's 35-yard interception return.
Tennessee capitalized on lost fumbles by Murray and Marshall and other mistakes for 20 unanswered points to take the lead.
Georgia's unraveling began when Malcolm Mitchell allowed a punt by Matt Darr to roll to the Bulldogs' 1. Georgia punted after three conservative running plays, setting up A.J. Johnson's 1-yard touchdown run from the Vols' "Beast" Wildcat formation.
On Georgia's second play, Murray fumbled when hit by blitzing linebacker Herman Lathers. Johnson recovered at the Georgia 8. On third down from the 4, Bray passed to Zach Rogers for a touchdown.
The deluge of mistakes continued for Georgia when Gurley caught the kickoff and stepped out of bounds at the 1. Four plays later, Marshall fumbled when hit by Curt Maggitt. Defensive end Darrington Sentimore recovered at the Georgia 18.
A facemask penalty on Georgia's Kwame Geathers helped pave the way for Neal's 10-yard touchdown pass from Bray for a 30-27 lead.
"I've always believed that this team has some fight in them," Dooley said. "We just had to go out there and prove it. We got hit by a freight train early in the game, but we were able to fight back and get back into it. We went toe to toe with a top 10 team that will be competing for a national championship."
Georgia All-America safety Bacarri Rambo and linebacker Alec Ogletree returned from four-game suspensions. Ogletree led Georgia with 14 tackles.
Mitchell, who started at cornerback in his first three games, started at wide receiver and had four catches for 31 yards.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The benefits and cost effectiveness of helicopter transport for severely injured patients is of continued debate. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Critical Care shows that for severe blunt trauma, patients transported by helicopter had a lower risk of death, compared to those transported by road.
In a multi-centre study, based in university hospitals across France, researchers compared initial patient status at the scene of the accident, with time taken to get to hospital, type of treatment received pre-admission, and to health at discharge, or after 30 days.
At first there seemed to be no difference in mortality between those transported by helicopter and those by road, however once the data had been adjusted for severity of injury the results became clear. Patients transported by helicopter stood a better chance of survival than those transported by road.
Dr Thibaut Desmettre, who led this study, explained, "Transporting very ill patients is a balancing act. Overall it took longer for patients transported by helicopter to reach hospital and they tended to need more emergency care once admitted. On the other hand these patients were more intensively treated at the scene and en route than those transported by road-ambulance crews -- which might go some way towards explaining their improved chances of survival."
However the benefit seen could not all be attributed to the more aggressive therapy they received before, or after, they arrived at hospital. Dr Desmettre continued, "We were unable to measure the distance the patients travelled, nor where their accident occurred -- some accidents occur in places where road access is too difficult -- and what impact this had on severity of injury or choice of sending a helicopter crew." Helicopters are a costly and limited resource and unfortunately the benefit to patients has to evaluated in this light. However, for these patients, with the most severe injuries, transport by helicopter saves lives.

Home building activity in the Denver area jumped by 51.5 percent in the first eight months of this year, compared with the same period in 2011, according to a report released today.
The report by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver shows that builders pulled 3,667 permits for single-family homes in the first eight months of the year, compared with 2,434 during the same period in 2011.
The report covers the counties of Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson, as well as all of the municipalities within those counties.
In August, builders pulled 649 permits for single-family detached homes, a 67.3 percent increase from the 388 in 2011, continuing the trend of year-over-year increases.
However, permit activity, which reflects future starts, is coming off a low-base, resulting in large percentage gains, noted local housing consultant S. Robert August.
Builders are pulling about a quarter of the permits they did during most of the past 30 years, August said.
The lack of building activity is even more dramatic, considering population growth August said.
?You would think that we would be seeing far more housing starts, because our population has grown to 2.8 million or 2.9 million from 2.1 million,? August said. ?With a bigger population comes a bigger demand, but we are still building a fraction of the houses we did during ?80s, ?90s and the first part of the 2000s,?
Still, builders have picked up the pace of construction to meet demand from consumers.
?There is a tremendous amount of pent-up demand in the Denver metro area,? August said. ?That will continue as our local economy improves, people feel more secure and comfortable in their jobs and consumer confidence improves. I remain cautiously optimistic. As we know, things can change on a dime.?
A number of new builders are entering the market to take advantage of the increased demand, he said.
And a number of Realtors increasingly are showing clients new homes, because the inventory of resale homes is down about 40 percent, he said.
?For the most part, though, builders are not constructing a lot of spec homes, so there is not a lot of standing inventory of new homes available,? August said. ?But if a buyer is willing to wait until the new home is delivered, they can get the new features that you can?t find in most existing homes.?
Earlier, Peter Niederman, CEO of Kentwood Real Estate, said that he thinks that builders are doing an excellent job of constructing homes to meet the needs and demands of prospective buyers.
?I think builders, whether it is?Richmond Homes, or anyone else, are doing the best job I have ever seen of building for the market,? Niederman said.
Richmond, owned by Denver-based MDC Holdings Inc., remains the largest builder in the metro area. It pulled 759 permits in the first eight months of the year in the Denver area, 71 percent more than the 444 during the same period in 2011. Century Communities was No. 2, pulling 470 permits, almost a 75 percent increase from the 275 permits it pulled in the first eight months of 2011.
August said new home activity also is benefitting from rising apartment rents. MBARI researchers discover what vampire squids eat

MOSS LANDING, CA About 100 years ago, marine biologists hauled the first vampire squid up from the depths of the sea. Since that time, perhaps a dozen scientific papers have been published on this mysterious animal, but no one has been able to figure out exactly what it eats. A new paper by MBARI Postdoctoral Fellow Henk-Jan Hoving and Senior Scientist Bruce Robison shows for the first time that, unlike its relatives the octopuses and squids, which eat live prey, the vampire squid uses two thread-like filaments to capture bits of organic debris that sink down from the ocean surface into the deep sea.
It's easy to imagine the vampire squid as a nightmarish predator. It lurks in the eternal midnight of the deep sea, has a dark red body, huge blue eyes, and a cloak-like web that stretches between its eight arms. When threatened, it turns inside out, exposing rows of wicked-looking "cirri." Even its scientific name, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, means "vampire squid from hell."
In reality, the vampire squid is a soft-bodied, passive creature, about the size, shape, and color of a football. A "living fossil," it inhabits the deep waters of all the world's ocean basins at depths where there is almost no oxygen, but also relatively few predators.
A few previous researchers have caught vampire squids in nets, hauled them up to the surface, and tried to figure out what they ate by examining the contents of their stomachs. The results were generally inconclusive. The stomachs typically contained bits and pieces of tiny, shrimp-like animals, microscopic algae, and lots of slimy goo.
In a recent article in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, Hoving and Robison show that vampire squids eat mostly "marine snow"a mixture of dead bodies, poop, and snot. The dead bodies are the remains of microscopic algae and animals that live in the waters farther up in the ocean, but sink down into the depths after they die. The poop consists of fecal pellets from small, shrimp-like animals such as copepods or krill. The snot is mostly debris from gelatinous animals called larvaceans, which filter and consume marine snow using mucus nets.
In addition to looking at the stomach-contents of vampire squids from museum collections, the researchers used MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to collect live vampire squids and study their feeding habits in the laboratory. They also examined high-definition videos of vampire squids taken by MBARI's ROVs. Finally, they examined vampire-squid arms and feeding filaments under optical and scanning electron microscopes.
One key to Hoving and Robison's discovery was that they used MBARI's ROVs to collect living vampire squids, and were able to keep them alive in the laboratory for months at a time. Hoving soon found that if he placed bits and pieces of microscopic animals into a tank with a vampire squid, the food particles would stick to one of the string-like filaments that the animal sometimes extends outward from its body. The vampire squid would then draw the filament through its arms, removing the particles from the filament and enveloping them in mucus. Finally, the squid would transfer the glob of mucus and particles to its mouth and consume it.
Using MBARI's video annotation and reference system (VARS), Hoving also identified every MBARI ROV dive over the last 25 years during which researchers had seen a vampire squid. He then pored over 170 of these video clips (over 23 hours of footage) to look for additional clues as to what and how the animals ate.
The videos showed that vampire squids often drift motionless in the water, extending one of their thin filamentsup to eight times as long as the animal's bodylike a fishing line. In many cases, Hoving saw bits of marine snow sticking to the filament. He also saw vampire squids slowly pulling in their filaments and scraping off the accumulated marine snow using their arms. Other vampire squids had globs of marine snow and mucus dangling from their mouths.
Under the microscope, the researchers observed that the vampire squid's suckers were covered with cells that produce mucus, which the animal apparently uses to collect and glue together individual particles of marine snow. Their filaments are covered with tiny hairs and a dense net of sensory nerves, which makes them extremely sensitive to touch.
When looking at vampire squids' stomach contents, the researchers did not see bones or pieces of individual animals that would indicate the vampire squids had captured live prey. Instead, they saw mostly amorphous bits of broken-up organic debris. The only prey they saw that might have been eaten alive were the remains of tiny crustaceans that sometimes "hitchhike" on sinking mucus nets or clumps of the marine snow.
After considering all the evidence, Hoving and Robison conclude that, "the vampire squid's filament is likely a multifunctional organ that is deployed to detect and capture detrital matter but at the same time may detect the presence of predators and perhaps small living prey."
The organic detritus that forms the bulk of the vampire squid's diet would not seem to be particularly nutritious. However vampire squids complement their frugal diet with an extremely energy-efficient lifestyle and unique adaptations. Their bodies are neutrally buoyant, so they don't have to expend energy to stay at a particular depth. Even better, they don't have to swim to find food, but simply extend their filaments to collect food that drifts past them.
Finally, vampire squids don't have to expend much energy avoiding predators, because they live at depths where there is so little oxygen that few other animals can survive. Conveniently, these deep, low-oxygen zones are often found where there is an abundance of life near the sea surface, which in turn creates lots of marine snow for vampire squids to eat. Hoving explains, "Because of its unique adaptations, the vampire squid is able to permanently and successfully inhabit the center of the oxygen minimum zone, an otherwise hostile environment where the vampire squid's predators are few, and its food is abundant."
Even though Hoving and Robison's research shows that the vampire squid is a "detritivore" rather than an active predator, its sinister appearance and stealthy habits will no doubt continue to fascinate both researchers and the general public.

MOSS LANDING, CA About 100 years ago, marine biologists hauled the first vampire squid up from the depths of the sea. Since that time, perhaps a dozen scientific papers have been published on this mysterious animal, but no one has been able to figure out exactly what it eats. A new paper by MBARI Postdoctoral Fellow Henk-Jan Hoving and Senior Scientist Bruce Robison shows for the first time that, unlike its relatives the octopuses and squids, which eat live prey, the vampire squid uses two thread-like filaments to capture bits of organic debris that sink down from the ocean surface into the deep sea.
It's easy to imagine the vampire squid as a nightmarish predator. It lurks in the eternal midnight of the deep sea, has a dark red body, huge blue eyes, and a cloak-like web that stretches between its eight arms. When threatened, it turns inside out, exposing rows of wicked-looking "cirri." Even its scientific name, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, means "vampire squid from hell."
In reality, the vampire squid is a soft-bodied, passive creature, about the size, shape, and color of a football. A "living fossil," it inhabits the deep waters of all the world's ocean basins at depths where there is almost no oxygen, but also relatively few predators.
A few previous researchers have caught vampire squids in nets, hauled them up to the surface, and tried to figure out what they ate by examining the contents of their stomachs. The results were generally inconclusive. The stomachs typically contained bits and pieces of tiny, shrimp-like animals, microscopic algae, and lots of slimy goo.
In a recent article in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, Hoving and Robison show that vampire squids eat mostly "marine snow"a mixture of dead bodies, poop, and snot. The dead bodies are the remains of microscopic algae and animals that live in the waters farther up in the ocean, but sink down into the depths after they die. The poop consists of fecal pellets from small, shrimp-like animals such as copepods or krill. The snot is mostly debris from gelatinous animals called larvaceans, which filter and consume marine snow using mucus nets.
In addition to looking at the stomach-contents of vampire squids from museum collections, the researchers used MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to collect live vampire squids and study their feeding habits in the laboratory. They also examined high-definition videos of vampire squids taken by MBARI's ROVs. Finally, they examined vampire-squid arms and feeding filaments under optical and scanning electron microscopes.

Apple had a very good weekend, with sales of its new iPhone 5 surpassing 5 million. That's about a million units more than it sold during the iPhone 4S' first weekend a year ago. However, the weekend likely wasn't as good for those who were left empty-handed on Monday, as AT&T, Verizon and Sprint stores reportedly were sold out.

Language use is simpler than previously thought, study suggests
ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? For more than 50 years, language scientists have assumed that sentence structure is fundamentally hierarchical, made up of small parts in turn made of smaller parts, like Russian nesting dolls.
A new Cornell study suggests language use is simpler than they had thought.
Co-author Morten Christiansen, Cornell professor of psychology and co-director of the Cornell Cognitive Science Program, and his colleagues say that language is actually based on simpler sequential structures, like clusters of beads on a string.
"What we're suggesting is that the language system deals with words by grouping them into little clumps that are then associated with meaning," he said.
Sentences are made up of such word clumps, or "constructions," that are understood when arranged in a particular order. For example, the word sequence "bread and butter" might be represented as a construction, whereas the reverse sequence of words ("butter and bread") would likely not.
The sequence concept has simplicity on its side; language is naturally sequential, given the temporal cues that help us understand and be understood as we use language. Moreover, the hierarchy concept doesn't take into account the many other cues that help convey meaning, such as the setting and knowing what was said before and the speaker's intention.
The researchers drew on evidence in language-related fields from psycholinguistics to cognitive neuroscience. For example, research in evolutionary biology indicates that humans acquired language (and animals did not) because we have evolved abilities in a number of areas, such as being able to correctly guess others' intentions and learn a large number of sounds that we then relate to meaning to create words. In contrast, the hierarchy concept suggests humans have language thanks only to highly specialized "hardware" in the brain, which neuroscientists have yet to find.
Research in cognitive neuroscience shows that the same set of brain regions seem to be involved in both sequential learning and language, suggesting that language is processed sequentially. And several recent psycholinguistic studies have shown that how well adults and children perform on a sequence learning task strongly predicts how well they can process the deluge of words that come at us in rapid succession when we're listening to someone speak. "The better you are at dealing with sequences, the easier it is for you to comprehend language," Christiansen said.
The study by Christiansen and his colleagues has important implications for several language-related fields. From an evolutionary perspective, it could help close what has been seen as a large gap between the communications systems of humans and other nonhuman primates. "This research allows us a better understanding of our place in nature, in that we can tie our language ability, our communication abilities, more closely to what we can see in other species. It could have a big impact in terms of allowing us to think in more humble terms about the origin of language in humans," Christiansen said.
The research could also affect natural language processing, the area of computer science that deals with human language, by encouraging scholars to focus on sequential structure when trying to create humanlike speech and other types of language processing, Christiansen said. He pointed out that machines already successfully perform such tasks as translation and speech recognition thanks to algorithms based on sequential structures.
The study, "How hierarchical is language use?" was published Sept. 12 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. The research was funded by the European Union, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and the Binational Science Foundation.
